Ungenach can be discovered through two distinct sides: its long local history, with church art and settlement traces, and its forest-rich cultural landscape, with trails and opportunities for mountain biking. Its history stretches from early settlement traces to medieval crafts; at the same time, the forest nature trail and circular hiking trail offer specific routes to explore. This lets you discover both cultural and landscape connections without any single attraction defining the whole character of the place.

Church Art and Historical Traces Through Time

Ungenach Parish Church was built in 1526. Its chancel arch crucifix dates from around 1530. The dates refer to two different things: 1526 marks the construction of the church, while the approximate date of around 1530 refers to a specific work inside it. The side altar includes statues from the Schwanthaler family. A Baroque statue of the Good Shepherd was probably made by Thomas Schwanthaler. In addition to the dates, names and a tentative attribution are also distinct aspects of the church art. To understand its cultural history, the building, crucifix and altar statues can be considered separately rather than reducing the furnishings to a single date.

From Medieval Crafts to Historic Estates

Medieval pottery workshops have been documented in the main settlement of Ungenach, in the house known as “Hafner.” They give the town’s history a concrete connection to medieval crafts. Remains of old Roman roads and the discovery of a Roman horseshoe are considered evidence of early settlement on the southern foothills of the Hausruck near Ungenach. These clues belong to a much earlier period than the pottery workshops. Historic local names also add to the picture: a historic noble estate in Ungenach is now known as “Wirt z'Ungenach”; Schloss Ainwalding is now known as “Moar z'Ainwalding.” The Roman remains, medieval crafts and traditional names of the historic estates offer different clues to the development of the town.

Forest, Cultural Landscape and Trails

Ungenach is a forest-rich municipality in the cultural landscape of the Hausruck region. Its traditional agricultural structure has remained almost unchanged to this day. The abundance of forests and the agricultural character describe two sides of rural life: the wooded surroundings and the town’s traditional farming structure. The forest nature trail leads through wooded areas. Ungenach is also home to the Thomas Bernhard Circular Hiking Trail, and the surrounding area is suitable for mountain biking. There are several ways to enjoy the outdoors: a nature trail through forest areas, a named circular hiking trail and mountain biking in the surrounding area.
