Vöcklabruck offers two distinct ways to enjoy a stay: culture, with archaeological and architectural points of interest, and recreation and circular walks. At the Heimathaus City Museum, finds from different eras meet a building with a history of its own; outdoors, the Agerinsel and several trails offer a different focus. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether you would like to focus more on cultural attractions or walking routes.

Collections, architectural history and art

The Heimathaus City Museum in Vöcklabruck displays ten gilded Lombard copper plates from the 8th century. It also has an extensive collection of pile-dwelling finds from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. The museum is housed in the Benefiziatenhaus, one of the oldest buildings in the city. Here, archaeological themes meet a historic building that is itself part of the city’s history.

The parish church of St. Ulrich is designed as a two-aisled hall church, a form typical of Late Gothic architecture in Upper Austria. If you include church architecture in your selection, it offers a clear architectural point of interest alongside the museum’s archaeological themes. The historic town square lies between two striking city towers. The Lower City Tower took its present form at the beginning of the 14th century.

Since 1976, the Stadtgalerie in the Lebzelterhaus has brought national and international artists to Vöcklabruck. It complements the archaeological and architectural highlights with another cultural perspective. The city’s attractions therefore range from historic artefacts and architectural styles to a venue that brings artists from Austria and around the world to Vöcklabruck.

Recreation and walking routes

The Agerinsel is designated as a local recreation area in Vöcklabruck. For travellers who want to make time for recreation as well as collections and architectural history, it offers a distinct local highlight. When planning your stay, you can decide whether you would rather focus on cultural attractions or on recreation and outdoor activities.

The Geispiel circular hiking trail starts on the grounds of the Vöcklabruck leisure park and leads to the “roof of Vöcklabruck”, Geispiel, after about 5 km. There is a summit cross and a place to sit, as well as impressive views. The Altwartenburg circular hiking trail also starts on the grounds of the leisure park. Both routes therefore share the same starting point; the Geispiel route also has a named destination and an approximate distance.

The Schlierwand circular trail passes the Vöckla weir and follows a footpath to the steepest climb on the route. The routes have different points of reference: the Geispiel trail focuses on the route to a named destination and the views, while Schlierwand features the path by the weir and the climb. You can use these specific details when comparing the routes. Check current trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.

Another way to explore Vöcklabruck by theme is the interactive city walk “Anton and the Detectives”. It follows in the footsteps of Anton Bruckner and his music through the city. If you want to make this activity a firm part of your plans, check its current availability in advance, as the app and how the walk is run may change.
