Egelsee is a distinctive natural landmark in Unterach Am Attersee: the moor lake is about 105 metres long and 65 metres wide, and is a relic of the Ice Age. An easy hike leads directly to it; another walking option is the Time Travel Trail, an easy loop that takes about an hour. There is also a cycling route about 34 kilometres long, listed historic sites and specific activities on the water. This lets you choose nature, local history and exercise as separate focuses for your stay.

Natural Features and Trails

In 1965, around 4.1 hectares of Egelsee and Egelseemoor were designated a nature reserve by decree. An easy hike from Unterach leads directly to Egelsee, passing forests, animal enclosures and meadows, with numerous viewpoints along the way. The hike therefore combines the route to the moor lake with several different landscape features.

Another natural highlight is Unterach’s sweet chestnut forest: nowhere else north of the Alps do sweet chestnuts fully ripen. Unterach is also one of the municipalities in the Bauernland – Irrsee Mondsee Attersee Nature Park.

The Unterach am Attersee Time Travel Trail is an easy, 1.9-kilometre themed circular trail that takes about an hour. It runs from the Unterach am Attersee boat landing to Gustav Klimt Platz in Unterach am Attersee. If you are planning around the approximate duration, check the current route information in advance.

The trail to Hochplettspitz runs over forest floor and forestry roads to a viewing platform overlooking Lake Attersee and many of the region’s mountains. The trails also differ in their destinations: the Time Travel Trail leads to Gustav Klimt Platz, while the Hochplettspitz trail leads to the platform with views of the lake and mountains.

Culture and Local Topics

The Catholic parish church of St Bartholomew and the former cemetery grounds in Unterach am Attersee are protected as historic monuments by decree. The Viktor Kaplan Mausoleum in Unterach is also protected as a historic monument, under a decision pursuant to Section 3.

The Unterach Culture Walk can be booked at any time on request for groups, associations, companies and tour groups. Confirm the arrangements again before your trip. The Chestnut Festival takes place annually; there will also be an edition in 2026, featuring numerous local specialities.

Activities on the Water and by Bike

The climbing tower in the Unterach recreation area has around 40 climbing routes, graded from 3+ to 10. Unterach lido offers a water-skiing school and boat hire. Alongside the hiking trails, climbing and activities on the water are therefore available as distinct options.

The R2 Salzkammergut Cycle Path, about 34 kilometres long, runs from Seewalchen to Unterach. After the cycle tour, it is possible to return to Attersee by boat. Check the current timetables if you are planning to take the boat on a particular day. For this combination, the timetable for the possible return trip matters as well as the cycling route.
