Discover Puchenau through its natural surroundings, outdoor activities and an annual festival. For planning your visit, it helps to distinguish between the different offerings: Puchenau Au is a peaceful local recreation area right on the Danube, the Stations of the Cross route climbs through the forest, and the cycling connections each offer their own points of reference. This lets you decide whether to focus your stay on nature by the river and in the alluvial forest, a hike, cycling or the Maypole Festival.
Nature on the Danube
As a natural alluvial forest, Puchenau Au provides a habitat for many plants and animals. Its character combines riverside recreation with a habitat for flora and fauna. If you want to include nature in your stay, the Au is a destination in its own right: it combines peaceful local recreation right on the Danube with the alluvial forest as a natural environment.
Hiking trails and fortification towers
The Puchenau Stations of the Cross route is well marked and climbs around 200 metres through the forest, passing fourteen Stations of the Cross. The approximate ascent helps you gauge this hike as a route with elevation gain, setting it apart from a stay on the Danube riverbank. The route begins in Puchenau. To reach the start, take the Puchenau stop on the MĂĽhlkreisbahn railway or the Puchenau Ost bus stop.
The Towers Trail is a detour from the Puchenau Stations of the Cross route and leads to three partially dilapidated fortification towers. This detour adds a specific architectural point of interest to the route. The brochure “Quo Vadis? – Hiking, Running and Nordic Walking in Puchenau” also presents routes for all three activities. It offers a broader range of options than the Stations of the Cross route alone, with hiking, running and Nordic walking featured as distinct activities.
Cycling along the Danube
The cycling connections also cater to different needs. The Linz–Puchenau main cycle route provides a continuous cycling connection as far as the Puchenau heating plant. The Danube Cycle Path R1 runs right along the riverbank on the section near Puchenau. The difference is useful for navigation: the heating plant is the specifically named endpoint of the main cycle route, while the R1 is notable for following the riverbank. Depending on your plans, you can look for a connection to a named destination or a route along the river.
Activity Park and Maypole Festival
In the centre of Puchenau, the Puchenau Activity Park is located on the golf course meadow and features outdoor fitness equipment. The equipment can be used outdoors at any time of day, all year round and free of charge. This outdoor fitness offering complements the options available on the hiking and cycling trails.
The golf course meadow is also the venue for the annual Maypole Festival, which offers a varied entertainment programme for all ages. The festival takes place at a specific time of year, unlike the Activity Park exercises, which are available year-round. If you want to plan your trip around the Maypole Festival, check the dates for your chosen year.
