Gallneukirchen combines paths along the Gusen and traces of the horse-drawn railway with church architecture and regional craft history. When planning a stay, it helps to consider the different types of routes: Would you like a trail combining nature and culture, a view of the Gallneukirchen Basin, or a focus on architecture and local history? The routes differ in length, course, and theme; churches and the local history museum add a distinct cultural focus to the landscape experiences.

Paths along the Gusen and historic routes

The Gallneukirchen Nature and Culture Trail is a circular route about 7 km long and runs along the Gusen. It follows traces of the horse-drawn railway, passing the former station building “Waldheimat.” The route description therefore connects the riverside path with a specific link to the former railway line. Its circular route and approximate length are useful points of reference when choosing a trail.

The Gallinger Höhenweg is shorter, at 2.5 km, and offers views of the Gallneukirchen Basin. The 6 km-long Horse-Drawn Railway Hiking Trail runs mostly along the former railway line. The routes therefore offer different highlights: one focuses on views and the Höhenweg, while another emphasizes the historic railway line or a longer circuit with nature and cultural themes.

Another option is the accessible G1 themed trail. It starts and ends at Gallneukirchen Town Hall, following the Gusen to the Mirellenbach and back. Its route differs from the circular Nature and Culture Trail: G1 is described as an out-and-back route, while the Nature and Culture Trail is a loop. The features listed for each trail can help you choose a route based on its course and theme.

Local history museum, churches, and local history

The Gallneukirchen local history museum displays objects and workshops from former commercial and craft businesses in the region. Anyone interested in the history of local crafts will find a different focus here than on the paths along the Gusen: rather than landscapes and railway lines, the museum centers on historic working life.

The churches also differ in their architectural history and furnishings. The Catholic Church of St. Gallus was built in its present form in the 14th century. Its features include a late Gothic rib vault, a high altar and a pulpit dating from 1770, and a fresco from around 1500. These dates point to several historical periods reflected in a single building.

The Evangelical Christ Church has a three-bay, two-aisled nave with rib vaults, as well as a Neo-Gothic pulpit. Gallneukirchen therefore offers different features for those interested in church architecture: at St. Gallus, the vault, altar, pulpit, and fresco form part of its historic character; at Christ Church, the layout of the nave and the Neo-Gothic pulpit are defining features.

Local history also includes Gugalea, the historic place of execution on Penkenberg, in the forest above the Warschenhofergut estate. Today, a memorial plaque and a Gothic stone column mark the site. Its history spans two separate periods: from 1272 to 1411, Gugalea was the place of execution for the episcopal Passau high court; from 1576 to 1756, death sentences were carried out there by the Starhemberg court. Distinguishing between the periods also preserves the change in jurisdiction.
