Marked cycle routes, hiking trails through fields and meadows, and the Parish Church of St. George give you three different starting points for a stay in Sankt Georgen bei Obernberg am Inn. The municipality lies in a quiet, flat landscape in the Geinberg thermal spa region; finds from the Stone Age and chapels also point to the area’s history. This gives you a chance to decide in advance whether outdoor activities, the landscape, or architectural and cultural history will shape your stay.

Cycling and hiking

Marked routes in Sankt Georgen are ideal for cycle touring; the village is also close to the Inn Cycle Route. The flat landscape in the Geinberg thermal spa region is another characteristic of the area. On foot, hiking trails lead through fields and meadows and offer striking views of the landscape. When planning, you can therefore choose between two clearly distinct options: cycle routes and the nearby cycle touring route on the one hand, and paths through fields and meadows on foot on the other.

Landscape along the Hinddausseweg

The Hinddausseweg offers a closer look at the landscape. Along this route, you can enjoy views of flowering meadows and fields, as well as typical orchards with apple and pear trees. The municipal area also lies within the Unterer Inn European Nature Reserve. These two details offer different perspectives: the route features specific landscapes along the way, while the protected area provides the geographic context for the entire municipality. Before setting out on a hike, it is a good idea to check current trail conditions.

Parish church and early history

The Parish Church of St. George is a tuff-stone building with Baroque interior furnishings and statues from the Schwanthaler circle. The parish of Sankt Georgen was founded in the first half of the 8th century as part of the Diocese of Passau. This offers two different ways to explore local history: the foundation date places the parish in its historical period, while the tuff stone, Baroque furnishings and statues describe the church’s architectural and artistic features.

Stone Age finds provide evidence of early settlement in the area around Sankt Georgen. Replicas of the finds can be viewed at the primary school. If you would like to include this in your plans, check visiting arrangements in advance. Together with the parish’s foundation in the first half of the 8th century, the finds trace a timeline from the Stone Age to early church history. In this way, archaeological traces add another perspective to the area’s ecclesiastical, architectural and local history.

Chapels in the municipality

Chapels are scattered throughout the municipal area. One specific example is the Nonsbach Family Chapel. In 2008, four families from an Innviertel hamlet, closely connected personally and economically, decided to build the Nonsbach Family Chapel as a community chapel; three larch trees from a neighbouring village were used in its construction. Unlike the parish church, with its architectural and decorative history, Nonsbach tells the story of a shared decision to build; the scattered chapels also form a feature found throughout the municipal area.
