Langenstein lies about 15 km east of Linz, in a peaceful location between the hills of the MĂĽhlviertel and the Danube floodplains. The town combines landscape and nature with archaeological sites and a memorial site. When choosing a destination, you can first consider whether hiking trails, cycling and waterways or, instead, history and remembrance should be the main focus. Langenstein can be reached via the Danube federal road.
Hiking trails, cycling and waterways
The Spilbergrunde is a 4 km hiking trail in Langenstein. The R 28 Gusental cycle route is a cycling route in the town. Langenstein therefore offers different options for planning activities: a hiking option with a specified length and a cycling route option. The Donau C fishing area is also located within the municipality; the main body of water is the Danube, and the Gusen is a secondary waterway. If you are more interested in waterways than in a route, you can consider this separately from hiking or cycling plans.
Biotope and floodplain landscape
In 1991, a biotope nestled in a floodplain landscape was created in the village of Langenstein to preserve the habitat of the animals living there. Information boards at the biotope show these animals and native plants. The nature focus thus encompasses both the floodplain landscape and its flora and fauna. This complements the trails and waterways with a closer look at a habitat and its species.
Archaeological sites and history
The “Berglitzl” on Seyerberg in the municipality of Langenstein is an archaeological excavation and sacrificial site dating back to the Palaeolithic era. In the village of Frankenberg, the “Frankenberger-Kircherl” commemorates another chapter in the municipality’s history as a memorial to the Peasants’ War.
A former moated castle was first mentioned in official records in 1149 and was probably built by the Lords of Machland. Today, it is owned by the Krassay family and is located in the Schlossau floodplain area near the northern bank of the Danube. The Berglitzl and the moated castle represent different historical connections: a site dating back to the Palaeolithic era and a moated castle first mentioned in official records in 1149.
