Grieskirchen can be explored through its different architectural periods and specific destinations around the city: from a late Gothic building to the Baroque-style parish church, from art in public spaces to trails that lead to castles. For your stay, you can choose between cultural history, a walk with a named destination, and a route through the hilly countryside.

Architectural History in Grieskirchen

Parz Castle was built in 1514 using materials salvaged from the demolition of the old Tegernbach Castle. The parish church is the oldest building in the city and is dedicated to Saint Martin. Its first historically documented renovation took place in 1701/1702, when the church was given a Baroque makeover. These two buildings reflect different historical connections: the castle’s use of materials from an older castle, and the documented change in the church’s architectural style.

St. Anne’s Chapel also offers a distinctive glimpse into architectural history. It was built in 1468 and is a late Gothic building. Both its rib vault and its portal belong to the same period. The Trinity Column adds further specific features: it was erected as a votive column in 1708, stands about seven metres tall, and has a triangular ground plan. Its construction date, purpose and form each offer a different point of interest.

The Karbrunnen was built in 1610. The Klafterbrunnen is a small spring at the foot of a slope, not far from the swimming pool in Grieskirchen. Many people collect water there, especially for making coffee. The well is thus described not only as a place, but also as part of a local custom.

Art and Striking Details

Artist Maria Treml’s Stadtnetz is a work of art covering 1,600 m². It winds from house to house at a height of 13 to 25 metres and has become a symbol of connection and community in Grieskirchen. Its size and course describe the installation as specifically as its significance for the city.

The Kepler Clock, a 240 m² vertical, flat sundial, is located at the Grieskirchen school centre. Alongside the large-scale art installation, it offers a different approach to scale and form: the Kepler Clock combines its size with a clearly stated function as a sundial. It is intended to be open to visitors year-round; check the current conditions before your visit.

Castle Trails and Countryside

The Schloss-Parz Trail runs 4.4 km from the centre of Grieskirchen to Parz Castle and back. It starts at the church square by the parish church. The Schloss-Tollet Trail is longer at 7 km and also runs from the town centre to its destination and back. The two circular trails can therefore be distinguished by their stated lengths and the castle each leads to. Tollet Castle was rebuilt in 1607 in the Renaissance style in the area around Grieskirchen.

If you would rather focus on the countryside than on a castle destination, consider the Orchard Avenue to St. Georgen route: it passes through the hilly countryside of the Trattnachtal valley and offers views of Tollet Castle for much of the way. This gives you a choice of different trail themes without treating the routes as interchangeable. Conditions on the castle trails may vary by season; check them before setting out.

Planning for Leisure and Arrival

The family-friendly Grieskirchen leisure pool has a water surface of more than 760 m². As seasonal opening arrangements may change, check the current season before your visit. Grieskirchen-Gallspach railway station is about 1 km from Grieskirchen. If you are travelling by train, keep this approximate distance in mind when planning your journey.

When choosing accommodation, it may help to consider which side of Grieskirchen you want to shape your stay: its historic buildings, its art and local places, or a trail leading to a castle. If you are planning more time to explore the surrounding area, the route through the Trattnachtal valley also offers a countryside alternative to the two castle trails.
