Tollet Castle and its history
Tollet Castle is situated close to the district town of Grieskirchen on a hill above the Trattnach Valley and is the landmark of the municipality of the same name. Ortlof von Tollet had the first fortification on the site built in 1170. Between 1601 and 1611, Hans V. Jörger von Tollet had the castle rebuilt in the Renaissance style. More than four centuries separate the two construction phases: the first fortification and the Renaissance rebuilding should therefore be understood as distinct chapters in the castle’s history.
The Jörger von Tollet family is documented as an Upper Austrian noble family from the 13th century onward. In the 16th century, they were among Austria’s most distinguished families and held a leading position among the Protestant estates. The castle’s history thus connects specific construction phases with the family’s dynastic history, whose name is closely associated with Tollet.
Kulturama Tollet Castle opened on 23 April 2009 and primarily presents special exhibitions on a range of subjects. The castle’s history and Kulturama therefore offer different points of focus: one explores the construction phases and the Jörger family, while the other presents special exhibitions on various topics.
Earth Huts in Unterstetten
The Unterstetten earth hut consists of seven rooms connected by one horizontal and six vertical crawl passages. The entrance to the Meirhofer earth hut in Unterstetten is covered; it is considered one of the most beautiful and best-preserved earth huts in Upper Austria. The Upper Austrian Earth Hut Centre regularly offers guided tours and excursions; contact the centre for specific dates.
Church and trails
St. Ulrich’s Church in Wödling is documented from as early as 1200 and is one of the oldest religious buildings in the Grieskirchen parish. Its high altar is adorned with statues of Saint Ulrich, Saint Andrew and Saint Stephen; the bell dates from 1619.
To reach Tollet Castle, take the short footpath of around 300 m from the Tolleterau stop. St. Ulrich’s Church can be reached on the Grieskirchen–St. Agatha line; from the stop at Schappenedt, it is around 500 m on foot. The approximate distances therefore vary by destination: around 300 m to the castle and around 500 m to the church.
The Tollet hiking trail is signposted. Route 105, the Trattnach Valley–Aschach Valley Trail, is designated in Tollet for walking and cycling. There are walking and cycling paths along the Trattnach; upstream, they offer glimpses of the local flora and fauna. The information varies in focus: the hiking trail is noted as signposted, the route as designated for walking and cycling, and the Trattnach paths for their connection to the area’s flora and fauna.
