Maria Schmolln brings together a range of things to discover: the pilgrimage church offers insights into architectural history, the monastery garden into plants and herbal knowledge, and the Sollingerhof Farmers’ Museum into everyday rural life. Outdoors, the “GEMMA SCHMOLLN SCHAUEN – long route” and the KTM Kobernaußerwald Mountain Bike Arena add to the options. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether culture, gardens or cycling will shape your stay.

Pilgrimage Church and Picture Trail

The Maria Schmolln pilgrimage church was built between 1860 and 1863. The Chapel of Grace was added to the church in 1880. The dates make the sequence clear: the church was built first, followed by the chapel as a later extension. The Pilgrim’s Fountain beside the pilgrimage church is recommended as the starting point for the picture trail. This brings together the church’s history and a practical landmark for finding your way around the trail.

Monastery Garden and Rural Everyday Life

The Maria Schmolln Monastery Garden is located in the former Franciscan monastery and is laid out as a show garden. It invites visitors to linger and offers insights into herbs and medicinal plants. More than 100 plants can be seen, including medicinal and culinary herbs, roses, various types of mint and berries. The grounds also include a meditation garden and poisonous plants. Plant diversity and learning are the shared focus here.

The Sollingerhof Farmers’ Museum offers a different perspective. It is housed in a newly built Innviertel-style timber-framed barn. Agricultural equipment, former means of transport, household items and numerous historical tools offer insights into rural work, crafts and everyday life. The collection spans tools and work, as well as transport and household life.

The difference between the garden and the museum can help you choose what interests you: the monastery garden focuses on plants and herbal knowledge, while the Sollingerhof explores objects and aspects of rural life. The pilgrimage church and its chapel offer another cultural focus, with an easy-to-follow architectural history.

Walking Routes and Mountain Bike Trails

The “GEMMA SCHMOLLN SCHAUEN – long route” offers views of the mountains and the Kobernaußerwald. If you are looking for scenic views, this offers a different experience from mountain biking, where trail length, signage and riding style are important points of reference.

The KTM Kobernaußerwald Mountain Bike Arena has a total of 80 km of uniformly signposted mountain bike trails. One circular route in the arena is 55.5 km long, is signposted as a one-way route and includes around 1,400 metres of elevation gain. It runs through the Kobernaußerwald and the municipal areas of Maria Schmolln, Höhnhart, St. Johann am Walde and Treubach. In the Maria Schmolln and St. Johann am Walde area, the arena offers flowing descents, challenging climbs and technical challenges.

The distances describe different things: 80 km refers to the arena as a whole, while 55.5 km refers to the individual circular route. This makes it easy to distinguish the extent of the trail network from the specific loop. Check trail conditions before setting off.
