Moosbach brings together the Moosbach Valley natural area, trails through woods and fields, and traces of local history. The municipality is mostly hilly; archaeological evidence probably dates back to the La Tène period. This offers several different ways to plan a visit: nature and outdoor activities, or the history of places and buildings. The Moosbach Valley circular trail starts and ends in 5271 Moosbach. Regional bus 861 also runs through the village.
Nature and trails in Moosbach
The impressive linden tree on Pfarrhofberg is considered a landmark of Moosbach. The Moosbach Valley natural area is an ecosystem covering about seven hectares. Its wetlands and biotopes are home to numerous plant and animal species. A nature trail about two kilometres long runs through the area. Its approximate length offers a concrete point of reference when choosing a route. There are also trails through woods and fields in Moosbach for hiking.
Another option is the Moosbach Valley circular trail – Bewegungsarena: it starts in 5271 Moosbach, leads through the Moosbach Valley and climbs to a panoramic viewpoint, then returns to the starting point. The two trail options differ in focus: the nature trail’s approximate length is a useful planning detail, while the circular route is notable for starting and ending in the village and climbing to the panoramic viewpoint. If you would like to include cycling routes in your plans, you’ll find trails winding through the mostly hilly municipality. Route conditions may change; check the latest description before setting out.

Archaeology and local history
The Celtic earthwork in Schachawald probably dates from the La Tène period, part of the later Iron Age, which lasted from about 450 BC to around the birth of Christ. Another way to explore local history is the Moosbach History Trail. Among other things, it covers the former Hofmark tavern, Waasen Water Castle and the old vicarage. These topics offer insights into various aspects of local history, from an archaeological site to buildings and former centres of community life.
The underground passage was discovered in 1995 during construction work in the village of Moosbach. In times marked by many dangers to life and limb, it served as a place of refuge for the local population. Waasen Castle was blown up in the summer of 1878 and completely demolished by the mid-1880s. A scale model of the castle complex was made in 2008. It is located in the foyer of the Hofmarksaal Moosbach and can be viewed from outside. Check access arrangements before your visit.
Monuments are also part of Moosbach’s history: the Viereckschanze near Hufnagl is protected as a monument under a decision pursuant to Section 3. The Catholic parish church of St Peter and the cemetery in Moosbach are protected by regulation. The relevant entries in the Federal Monuments Office register are dated 23 June 2026. Together with the History Trail and the model of Waasen Castle, these monuments add further chapters of local history to the archaeological traces.
