In Auerbach, marked hiking trails lead to a range of destinations and cover different distances. There is also a pilgrimage chapel with a spring beneath its forecourt, historic churches and archaeological finds. When planning your trip, you can choose between short local routes, longer circular trails and two long-distance hiking trails; riding lessons are also available in the area.

Hiking trails: from short walks to long-distance routes

Auerbach has marked hiking trails that can also be used by Nordic walkers and runners. Check local conditions before setting out. Three described routes offer a direct comparison by length: the shortest is 1 km long and runs from the “Unterkling” trail in Oberirnprechting to the “Heiliges Kammerl” pilgrimage chapel and back.

A 3 km route starts in Auerbach and passes through the Siedelberg forest to Unterkling. Along the way, it goes past fishponds; the trail returns to Auerbach via Oberkling. At 6 km, the route through the Saltal forest to Höring is longer. It returns to Auerbach via Wimpassing. The starting and return points, along with the distances, make the three options easy to distinguish without combining them into a single route.

Two long-distance hiking trails also pass through Auerbach. The 130 km Marien-Wanderweg is a Bavarian-Austrian trail that opened in 2014. The international long-distance trail 810, the Rupertiweg, also passes through the area. This means local routes sit alongside long-distance trails that cover a considerably greater total distance.

Chapel, spring and historic sites

The “Heiliges Kammerl” is a pilgrimage chapel in Unterirnprechting, built around 1800. A spring called “Frauenbründl” rises beneath its forecourt. The chapel and spring give the area two closely connected, clearly identifiable features. If you are interested in visiting this spot, you can plan the 1 km route from the “Unterkling” trail to the chapel and back.

Another historic landmark is the branch church of St. Stephan in Höring. It was first mentioned in 1160. This makes it significantly older in historical terms than the pilgrimage chapel, which was built around 1800: for St. Stephan, the date of its first mention is recorded, while for the Heiliges Kammerl, the approximate date of its construction is known. These dates refer to different historical points of reference.

Finds from five Auerbach graves in the Siedelberg also offer an insight into the area’s history. They date from the Illyrian period. The objects recovered include a magnificent bronze dagger with its scabbard and a well-preserved clay vessel. Alongside the churches and pilgrimage chapel, these archaeological finds offer another way to explore Auerbach’s past.

Horse riding in Auerbach

Riding lessons are offered at the Grill riding stables. Check directly with the riding stables for current options. Auerbach’s riding area is located in a landscape conservation area, where horse riding is not prohibited. Before setting out on a ride, confirm the local access and usage conditions.
