The Loisach springs near Biberwier are the source of one of the region’s best-known rivers. Together with the Beaver Trail, the long Three Lakes hike and the summer toboggan run, they show Biberwier through a range of different themes: water and landscape, local history, and a seasonal activity. For planning, it helps to treat these offerings as separate options rather than as one single tour, and to distinguish them by route, mode of travel and focus.

Water, Hiking and Cycling

The Loisach springs are a natural feature near Biberwier. The cycle path along the Loisach runs from Biberwier to the Bavarian Alpine foothills. This lets you distinguish between the springs as a natural feature and a cycling connection with a destination in the foothills. Both relate to the Loisach, but offer different starting points for planning your trip. Check local conditions before setting out on a bike ride.

The long Three Lakes hike in Biberwier leads to the Loisach springs, Mittersee and Blindsee. From there, it heads back towards Biberwier via WeiĂźensee and the Pfarrer-Fink-Steig trail. The route description thus names the bodies of water and a specific section of the return route. Unlike the cycle path, which leads to the Bavarian Alpine foothills, this hike focuses on several lakes and a return to Biberwier. Follow marked trails and check local conditions.

The Beaver Trail and Biberwier’s History

The Beaver Trail experience trail starts at the village park and leads around and through Biberwier. The village’s history comes to life at ten stations. The themes of mining, water, energy and the Via Claudia give the trail a historical focus. While the Three Lakes hike names specific bodies of water along its route, the Beaver Trail organizes its stops by theme. This is a helpful distinction when choosing between a longer hike and an experience trail about local history.

One of the historical points of reference is the Via Claudia Augusta: Biberwier lies on this historic route and was already a waypoint in Roman times. Mining is also part of the village’s history. Silver, lead and zinc were mined at Schachtkopf and Wampater Schrofen from the 15th century onwards. The Rochus Chapel on the Geißel was Biberwier’s first place of worship. It was built in 1611 and consecrated on 15 August 1625. These dates distinguish several periods and events: the Roman waypoint, mining from the 15th century onwards, and the construction and later consecration of the chapel.

A Seasonal Activity: The Summer Toboggan Run

The Biberwier summer toboggan run is 1.3 kilometres long and has 40 bends and a tunnel. It starts at the mid-station of the Marienbergbahn at an altitude of 1,180 metres and leads to the valley station. This clearly sets it apart from the hiking and cycling routes: its route features are specified, while the other offerings are described in terms of lakes, themes or a connection to the Bavarian Alpine foothills. As the summer toboggan run is seasonal, check operating conditions before your visit.
