Prutz lies at the entrance to the Kaunertal Valley, in a fertile basin framed by the Kaunergrat, the Glockturmkamm ridge and the Samnaun Group. In summer, the village is a popular starting point for hikes and mountain bike tours in the Kaunertal Valley and in the border region where Austria, Switzerland and Italy meet. Prutz is therefore particularly well suited to a stay that combines nature and landscape with local history. Cycle paths along the Inn and activities in the village add further options to your travel plans.

Landscape and trails

There are two routes to distinguish when planning a cycling trip: the Inn Cycle Path through the Tyrolean Oberland passes through the valley floor near Prutz, while section R8 of the Via Claudia Augusta follows the Inn to Prutz. Check current route information before setting out. A walking trail starts in Prutz, follows the Leitenwaldweg and reaches the “Fischer Ranch” between the main road and the Faggenbach stream. Together, the walking trail and cycle routes offer different ways to include Prutz in your travel plans on foot or by bike, while taking in the scenery.

Village character and history

The village centre has retained a streetscape of narrow lanes typical of a settlement in western Tyrol. The parish church of Maria Himmelfahrt in Prutz has a history dating back to the 11th century. The Sauerbrunn spring has been known since 1212; legend has it that the shepherd Nikolaus Schederle discovered it then. A fire is also part of the village’s history: at the beginning of the 20th century, it destroyed a large part of Prutz. The historical references thus range from the account of the Sauerbrunn spring to the fire in the early 20th century.

Customs and events

Customs are an important part of life in Prutz, where you can also see a beautifully painted farmhouse. The Prutz Apple Festival takes place on the last Sunday in September. Event details may change; if you are travelling for the festival, check the date for the year in question.

Leisure and travel planning

Prutz outdoor swimming pool has a large circular pool, a 42-metre water slide and a counter-current system. There is also a children’s pool, a sunbathing lawn and a playground. The pool is open seasonally; check the seasonal opening times before your visit. On Tuesdays, you can enjoy and discover fine spirits at Maass-Brand in Prutz. As dates may change, check in advance whether this activity is still scheduled.

The municipality’s official interactive village map helps you find your way around Prutz. If the municipal website has been redesigned, check whether the map is still available. When looking for a hotel in Prutz, it helps to start by deciding what brings you here: if you are planning summer hikes or mountain bike tours, the trails and landscape take centre stage; if you are interested in local history, the Sauerbrunn spring, church and village character are also worth exploring. The Apple Festival and the seasonal outdoor swimming pool provide specific pointers for choosing when to travel.
