Rettenegg offers a range of options for planning your excursions: a Planet Trail with a star pavilion and models, marked walking and hiking trails, moorland boardwalks on Schwarzriegel, and insights into local history. This lets you choose between exercise, nature and culture without all the experiences having to share the same focus.

Planet Trail and Hikes

The Planet Trail starts at the star pavilion, which depicts the northern summer sky with a total of 400 star points illuminated at night. From there, the trail leads to scale models of the planets inside glass spheres. The pavilion and the models thus offer two perspectives: the depicted starry sky and the planets shown to scale. If you are interested in the trail, it offers a specific thematic starting point for a stay in Rettenegg.

The hiking trails also offer a variety of options. Marked walking and hiking trails lead as far as the alpine regions of Stuhleck, Pretul and Hochwechsel. The Mühlenweg is considered a short hike, making it a different option from the trails that lead to these alpine regions. An alpannonia spur trail also runs from Rettenegg via the Planet Trail up to Stuhleck, where you can join the main trail. This connection is especially interesting if you want to link the Planet Trail with access to the alpannonia main trail.

Moorland Boardwalks on Schwarzriegel

On Schwarzriegel, architecturally designed wooden boardwalks lead through the moor. Information boards and a viewing platform complement the boardwalks. The site combines a path through the moor with information on site and a viewpoint. For your plans, this is a nature stop in its own right, alongside the marked hiking trails and the Planet Trail; the distinctive design of the wooden boardwalks sets it apart from a hiking route that mainly leads to an alpine region.

History and Notable Local Features

The “The Old Forest Railway” exhibition at Gasthof Rosinger displays original plans at a scale of 1:1000 and photographs of the former railway from Rettenegg to Steinhaus am Semmering. The plans and photographs bring the former railway to life: you can view the route depicted and the historical images together. Alongside its trails and nature stops, Rettenegg therefore also offers a local insight into the history of the railway.

Another notable local feature is the “World’s Largest Stamp”: it is two metres high and one metre in diameter. It was unveiled on 22 June 1997, and its imprint shows the municipal coat of arms of Rettenegg. Its dimensions and the coat of arms are both part of its description: the object is notable not only for its size, but also for the municipal coat of arms in its imprint.

Rettenegg Parish Church is dedicated to Saint Florian. Königshofer beekeeping is located in Rettenegg at an altitude of over 1,000 metres. These details add specific local features to the larger excursion destinations, without implying a particular order of visits.

Swimming and Tastings

At the Rettenegg indoor swimming pool, you can swim a few lengths. If you plan to swim, check the latest opening and access information before your visit. Guided tours and tastings are offered at the Kroisleitner trout farm and trout farm restaurant. Alongside walks, hiking trails and the moorland stop, your trip plans can therefore also include swimming, guided tours and tastings.
