Passail offers different ways to shape your stay: in Arzberg, the history of silver mining takes centre stage; trails lead to an alpine pasture and the source of the Raab; and guided experiences offer insights into cheese, honey and herbs. There is also a leisure lake and golf. When planning, you can start by considering which themes you would like to shape your stay.
Silver Mining and History
The show mine and educational tunnel in Arzberg is the only silver ore mine in the Graz Mountain Range that can still be visited. In the Middle Ages, silver from Arzberg was used to supply the Graz mint. On the 550-metre route through the mountain, the guided tour offers an insight into the hard working conditions of the miners.
The mining educational trail passes through the former mining area around Arzberg near Passail in the Almenland Nature Park. Part of the trail is designed as a family walking route, with special child-friendly stops. Unlike the mine tunnel, the focus here is on walking through the former mining district. This offers two different ways to explore the history of mining: a guided tour through the mountain and a trail through the former mining area.
Lindenberg Church is also a cultural and historical highlight: it was built in the late Gothic style as early as the 16th century.
Hiking Destinations and Plant Life
Hohenauer Ochsenhalt is a 125-hectare pasture at the foot of the Sommeralm. Its diverse plant life includes native orchids. Hiking trail No. 706 leads to Ochsenhalt, linking a named hiking destination with a nature theme.
The Raab Source Loop offers a different route. This family-themed trail leads from the WaldmĂĽhle at the head of the valley to the source of the Raab. The two trails therefore also have different destinations: one leads to an alpine pasture, the other to the source of the river.
The municipality of Passail is also part of the Raabklamm Natura 2000 site, providing further scenic context.
Water and Golf
Passail Leisure Lake has a water-play park, a diving platform, a water slide, a sandy beach and a raft. The golf offering has a different focus: Almenland Golf Course is an 18-hole course between Passail and Fladnitz/Teichalm. It offers courses for beginners, advanced players, children and teenagers, as well as a golf school.
Guided Insights into Cheese, Honey and Herbs
Almenland Stollenkäse combines cheese-making and cheese maturation with a former silver mine: a guided tour takes place in the Franz-Leopold tunnel. After the experience, selected cheeses are available to taste in the Grubenhaus. Please reconfirm the guided tour arrangements before your arrival.
Tours at Almenland Imkerei Kreiner explain the lives of bees and how honey products are made. The offering also includes tastings of various types of honey and honey praline chocolates.
Schroeder's Kräuterwerkstatt offers guided tours of its garden. During the tours, you can smell and taste herbs; homemade juices are also available. The three experiences have different focuses: cheese in a former mine, bees and honey, and herbs and the garden. For all three, you should reconfirm the guided tour arrangements before your arrival.
