Selzthal lies where the Enns and Paltental valleys meet. The town offers different themes to consider when choosing a place to stay: landscape and outdoor activities, as well as architectural and railway history.

Landscape and Seasons

Every spring, the expansive Selzthaler Moos blooms white with daffodils. From the gently rising hills around Selzthal, the view stretches across the entire Enns Valley to the Grimming. The blossoms and panoramic views offer different highlights: the moor provides a recurring springtime scene, while the view from the hills spans the valley to the Grimming. When choosing when to travel, you can weigh the spring blossoms against the winter cross-country skiing, which depends on snow conditions.

Hiking and the Return Journey

Hiking Tour 83 over the Dürrenschöberl descends to Selzthal along Trail No. 651. For the return journey after your hike, you can take trains from Selzthal station or RegioBus routes 930 and 931. The Dürrenschöberl route leads to the heritage-listed station, where passenger trains towards Graz and Liezen stop at the station-side platform. Include your return journey in your tour planning and check the timetable before setting off.

Cross-Country Skiing and Local Sports

When snow conditions permit, ESV Wintersport Selzthal grooms a cross-country ski trail approximately 11.7 kilometres long, from the sports centre across the Enns meadows to Neulassing. Visitors can enjoy the peace and nature along the trail. The winter route and the hiking tour also differ in how you plan: snow conditions are key for cross-country skiing, while Tour 83 requires planning your return journey from Selzthal.

The sports centre has a beach volleyball court, a football pitch, a fistball court, a curling hall, a tennis court, a skate park and a Naturfreundehaus. The availability of individual facilities may vary. The Selzthal curling hall of the railway workers’ sports club has several lanes. Selzthal outdoor swimming pool has a long slide and a current channel. These offer a choice of different sports and water activities as further options for your stay.

Local and Railway History

The Neo-Gothic Church of the Sacred Heart was consecrated in 1892. The Evangelical school and chapel in Selzthal are heritage-listed. The round locomotive shed with its turntable at the station, as well as the station itself, are also heritage-listed. The Selzthal–Weyer railway section opened in 1872. The years mark different events: 1872 the start of operations on the railway section, and 1892 the consecration of the church. This places religious architecture and railway infrastructure side by side as distinct themes in cultural history. A round locomotive shed is a building for locomotives; the turntable is a technical installation used to turn locomotives. The two terms thus refer to different parts of the railway infrastructure: a building and a movable installation at Selzthal station.
