Strimitzen lies opposite Ă–blarn on the steep southeastern slope of the Mitterberg. If you leave the B320 Ennstal federal highway at St. Martin am Grimming and drive towards Ă–blarn, you will pass through Strimitzen. Check current traffic restrictions before setting out.

Hiking and Mountain View Frames

The Mitterberg-Sankt Martin Activity Arena includes 14 different marked hiking, running and Nordic walking routes, covering a total of 70 kilometres. These figures describe the municipal network, not a single tour; individual routes and markings may change. Along the hiking routes are ten so-called “mountain view frames”, which frame views of mountain peaks and serve as photo spots. The arena also includes running and Nordic walking routes. Individual mountain view frames may be maintained or relocated. It is therefore worth checking the specific route and signage before setting out on a particular hike.

The Enns Cross-Country Ski Trail in Winter

One seasonal option is the Enns Cross-Country Ski Trail, Öblarn–Niederöblarn. The access road by car runs through Strimitzen; trailheads are in Öblarn by the Thiel garden centre and in Niederöblarn at the Sportsarea. The trail is a 6.2-kilometre classic-style route with a simple track along the Enns; as a loop, it can be up to nine kilometres long. The 6.2-kilometre trail length and the possible loop of up to nine kilometres offer two reference points for choosing a route. Cross-country skiing requires suitable snow conditions; access conditions can also change seasonally. Check current conditions before setting out.

Gstatt Castle and Gstatt Chapel

Gstatt Castle, a Baroque castle, is located near Strimitzen on the border with the municipality of Ă–blarn, but still within the municipality of Mitterberg-Sankt Martin. It was owned by Admont Abbey for a long time. South of Strimitzen is Gstatt Chapel, at the address Gstatt 9. It is protected as a historic monument by official decree under Section 3; the Styrian list of protected monuments dated 23 June 2026 records this protection.

To get your bearings, it helps to understand the names in their respective roles: Öblarn lies opposite Strimitzen and is also one of the cross-country ski trailheads; the other trailhead is in Niederöblarn. Gstatt Castle is located near Strimitzen on the border with Öblarn, but remains within the municipality of Mitterberg-Sankt Martin. The trailheads and the castle’s location therefore refer to different places.

The Place Name in Historical Records

Historical records give the place name as “an der Strimitzz” in 1289 and “ze Strimitzen” in 1437. The two records anchor different spellings to their respective periods. The name Strimitzen corresponds in form and meaning to the Slovenian word “strmica”, meaning “steep slope”. This meaning is consistent with its location on the steep southeastern slope of the Mitterberg. Strimitzen can thus be understood both through its geographical location and its recorded historical forms of the name.
