Liezen combines sacred architectural heritage and local collections with opportunities for hiking, cycling and tobogganing. This gives you different priorities to choose from: culture, views and outdoor activities.
Culture and Views
The parish church in Liezen is dedicated to St Vitus; its originally Romanesque building was first mentioned in 1150. The Calvary Chapel on Salberg was probably built in the Baroque style in 1720. The area in front of the chapel offers views across the Enns Valley, including the Grimming and the Schladming Tauern.
The old Bürgerhaus, with the Wöhr blacksmith’s workshop, has been preserved in its original form. The workshop is fully equipped and contains all its tools and work equipment. The Africa Museum houses various trophies, weapons, photographs and records belonging to the African explorer Hermann von Wissmann. The cultural offerings thus bring together sacred architectural heritage, preserved craftsmanship and a museum collection.
Hiking and Cycling Trails
The Rote Wand Tour is an approximately three-hour circular route with viewpoints over the town of Liezen, the Grimming and the Dachstein. The Lexgraben Tour reaches its highest point at 1,260 metres after about 1.5 hours; towards the end, there is an opportunity to see the WeiĂźenbach valley head and its waterfall. The distinction is important when planning your time: the approximately three hours refers to the circular route, while 1.5 hours is the time to reach the highest point of the Lexgraben Tour.
The viewpoints also offer different vistas: from the area in front of the Calvary Chapel, you can see across the Enns Valley towards the Grimming and the Schladming Tauern; the Rote Wand Tour has viewpoints overlooking Liezen, the Grimming and the Dachstein.
The Hinteregger Alm is a 184-hectare alpine pasture area in the municipality of Liezen, Styria. It lies north of Liezen at the foot of the Hochangern mountain massif, at the southern end of the Totes Gebirge, at an altitude of approximately 1,150 to 1,350 metres.
Liezen is on the Enns Valley Cycle Path R7. The route runs away from public traffic along the Enns, through meadows and fields, and is particularly suitable for families. A mountain bike trail more than 10 km long leads to the alpine pastures of the Hintereggeralm. These offer different cycling options: the R7, which is specifically suitable for families, and the mountain bike trail, distinguished by its length and destination at the alpine pastures.
The Lexgraben natural toboggan run is in Pyhrn, a district of Liezen, and invites you to go tobogganing. City-Rock Liezen climbing centre regularly offers courses for beginners and advanced climbers.
