A local circular route, a hiking trail with an elevation figure, and a route spanning several stages show how differently Altenmarkt can be explored on foot. For planning your trip, the specific differences in starting point, length, elevation and winter conditions are particularly helpful.

Routes from the town centre to a multi-stage trail

The unSINNE Trail is a 3 km circular route that starts and ends in the town centre of Altenmarkt bei Sankt Gallen. The hiking trail to Wiesberg offers a different option: it reaches an elevation of 802 m, and the return route runs via Hasenreit to Altenmarkt. This makes it easy to distinguish between a circular route in the town centre and a hiking trail with an elevation target and a named return route.

The Seven Elements Trail is on a different scale. It runs from Altenmarkt to Wildalpen over seven stages, covering 126 km and 6,100 metres of elevation gain. The route was ceremonially opened on 27 September 2025. Its number of stages and total distance differ considerably from those of a single local circular route, making it clear that this is a multi-stage trail.

Comparing the shorter loops is simpler: the Altenmarkt cross-country ski loop is 6 km long, while the Ennsfeld loop is 3 km. Winter use of both depends on sufficient snow cover. The Ennsfeld loop is half the length of the cross-country ski loop; when planning a winter trip, snow conditions are therefore just as important as the route length.

Pilgrimage site and hiking trail to the Rochus Grotto

The Rochus Grotto pilgrimage site lies between Altenmarkt and Großreifling (Krippau). For experienced hikers, the walk from Kendl-Reith to the Rochus Grotto takes about one hour. The starting point and approximate walking time are specific planning details for this hike; the route is suitable for experienced hikers.

Seasons and scenery

The Rochus Mass is held every year in August. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the specific event dates in advance. Altenmarkt is one of the four municipalities covered by the Styrian Eisenwurzen Nature and Geopark.

Fly fishing, swimming and regional cuisine

The 3 km fly-fishing stretch starts in Weißenbach bei Sankt Gallen, at the entrance to Wolfsbachau, and ends in Altenmarkt bei Sankt Gallen at Kesselbrücke, on the border between Styria and Upper Austria. If you would like to fish there, check access and the applicable regulations before your trip.

Altenmarkt swimming pool has a 33 m water slide for younger visitors. Alongside the trails and fly fishing, this gives younger visitors a specific activity to enjoy in the town.

Gasthof Post serves dishes including creamy fish soup, char sausage and Xeis Alpine salmon from Oberlaussa. The menu may change. If you plan to visit for a particular dish, check the current menu in advance.
