Geology in the Landscape and Village
The GeoDorf Gams is located in the heart of the UNESCO Global Geopark Steirische Eisenwurzen. Geological highlights in Gams bei Hieflau include the NothKlamm, carved by the Gamsbach, the stone-ball mill, geological excavation sites for children and the GeoRama. The geopark provides the regional context; the individual attractions span everything from landforms and stoneworking to the geological history of the region. This range is useful when planning your trip: you can focus on nature, stoneworking or culture without trying to combine every attraction into a single visit.
NothKlamm: Plan Your Route and Return Journey
NothKlamm is a gorge carved into the landscape by the Gamsbach; its trail is 700 metres long. The current restriction is important for planning: it is not possible to complete the full hike through the gorge. Visitors can currently hike as far as the stone-ball mill and must then return along the same route. Make sure to plan for this return journey rather than assuming you can hike through the gorge. Check before your trip whether the restriction is still in place.
Stones, Excavations and the History of the Earth
At the exit of NothKlamm, the stone-ball mill uses water power to shape a stone into a ball. Geological excavation sites for children have been located along the gorge since 2022. The GeoRama presents sections of the region’s 250-million-year geological history. In GeoWerkstatt workshops, collected stones are cut and identified. These attractions each have a different focus: the mill demonstrates a shaping process, the GeoRama puts long periods of time into context, and GeoWerkstatt works with collected stones.
Village Culture and a Fixed Date
Village culture also has a point of reference: the parish church of St Joseph in Gams bei Hieflau is dedicated to Saint Joseph. The procession of the Gamser Thomasnikolo takes place in Gams bei Hieflau on 21 December. Afterwards, the celebration continues in the church square, where the village community gathers for music and culinary treats. The date makes this a specific event to plan around. If you would like to see the procession, check the event details before travelling.
Water Slide and Ski Runs
ParkBad Gams has a 40-metre water slide. Kaiserlindenlift Gams has a drag lift and 750 metres of ski runs. There are different activities to choose from: a water slide at ParkBad or ski runs at the lift. The measurements refer to different things: 40 metres is the length of the slide, while 750 metres refers to the ski runs. They describe the respective facilities, not a direct comparison.
Getting to the GeoPfad
You can reach the GeoPfad by taking RegioBus line 912 from Liezen to Hieflau station. The on-call bus on line 922 serves the Gams bei Hieflau Postamt stop. These are different lines and stops: the first connection goes to Hieflau station, while the second goes to the post office in Gams. Routes and timetables can change, so check the connection and the stop that suits you before travelling.
