Mitterberg is a sunny high plateau and a distinctive hill in the middle of the Enns Valley. The range of trails reflects both in different ways: some routes are located on the high plateau, while a winter hiking route circles almost the entire mountain. There are also marked routes for hiking, running and Nordic walking, as well as a skating cross-country ski trail. For planning, it is worth deciding first which activity you have in mind, then comparing trail lengths and route types.
Marked Trails and Specific Routes
The Mitterberg-Sankt Martin Activity Arena includes 14 marked hiking, running and Nordic walking routes, with a total length of 70 kilometres. This figure describes the combined length of these routes, not a single tour; it therefore indicates the range of options, not the distance of any particular trail. The markings and the three activities listed give you two criteria for sorting through the options: navigation along the route and the type of activity.
The Mitterberg Trail is just under 18 kilometres long and is suitable for running. Its length may change if the route is diverted. The figure of just under 18 kilometres refers to this trail, while the 70 kilometres represent the combined length of the 14 marked routes. This distinction helps when comparing a single running route with the scale of the overall offering: the two figures answer different planning questions.
Skating and Winter Hiking
The 5.5 km Mitterberg skating trail is a skating cross-country ski trail on the high plateau; the municipal office in Mitterberg is its start and finish point. The “Winter Hiking on Mitterberg” route circles almost the entire Mitterberg. This gives you a choice of two different route types: a trail with a stated length and fixed start and finish point, and a winter hike whose defining feature is that it runs almost all the way around the mountain. In terms of distance, the ski trail is considerably shorter than the Mitterberg Trail, which is just under 18 km, but it is intended for a different activity.
Parking for the winter hiking route is available at the municipal office in Mitterberg or at the entrance to Kaindorf. The municipal office is also the stated start and finish point of the skating trail. Please check locally in advance whether parking is available in winter. Snow conditions are also seasonal and should be taken into account when planning this winter route.
Gstatt Castle
Gstatt Castle adds a cultural point of interest to the landscape and trail themes. The Baroque castle is located in the municipality of Mitterberg-Sankt Martin, on the border with the municipality of Öblarn, and is privately owned. Its position on the municipal boundary helps locate it geographically. If you are considering visiting Gstatt Castle, please check access in advance.
