Leoben combines distinctive historic sites with opportunities for hiking and cycling. One notable historical connection dates back to 1797: a historic treaty was signed in the Eggenwald Garden House after peace negotiations between France and Austria.
History and Cultural Sites
Explore Leoben on foot with a stroll through the old town. St. Xaver Parish Church was built between 1660 and 1665. Its façade is designed in the Renaissance style, while its interior features what is known as Jesuit Baroque. The church thus brings together two distinct stylistic influences.
The MuseumsCenter gives visitors insight into more than 1,100 years of Leoben’s history. The Leoben Art Hall presents changing exhibitions of contemporary Austrian art. Both institutions, along with the city library, are housed in the Leoben Cultural Quarter.
The Schwammerlturm is the only surviving medieval city gate in Leoben and a landmark of the city. From the café at the top of the tower, you can enjoy views over Leoben and the surrounding area. Check whether the café is currently open before visiting.
Göss Abbey also combines a long history with a distinctive architectural feature: it is the oldest monastery in Styria, and an Early Romanesque crypt lies beneath the church choir. Group tours are available year-round by telephone appointment; in summer, tours of the roof structure may also be offered. Check in advance to find out what is currently available.
To reach Massenburg Castle Ruins, follow the route from Jakobikirche via Dirnböckweg and Massenbergstraße. In just a few minutes on foot, you’ll pass through the historic gatehouse into the ruins’ courtyard.
On Foot and by Bike
Leoben has around 35 kilometers of marked running and walking trails. There are also hiking routes of varying difficulty in and around the city, including easy paths over Kalvarienberg and the more challenging hike up Mugel. These hiking options therefore differ both in difficulty and destination.
The Mur Cycle Path R2 runs for around eight kilometers through Leoben. The Iron Road Cycle Path R38 leads from Leoben via Trofaiach to Hieflau. The options range from a route through Leoben to a connection linking several of the towns mentioned. Check the current route and signage before setting out.
Seasonal Activities and Special Tours
During the winter season, visitors can play ice hockey, go ice skating and play Bavarian curling at the Leoben Ice Rink. The season generally runs from autumn until mid-March. This seasonal timeframe is important when planning your visit; all three activities are part of the rink’s winter schedule.
Asia Spa Leoben offers day and monthly tickets for visits to its day spa. The water park includes a slide tower and a climbing wall. Ticket terms and opening hours may change, so it’s advisable to check the latest information before visiting.
Another guided experience is offered by the Gösseum: at the end of a tour, freshly tapped Gösser beer and a beer pretzel are served. As visitor offerings may change, it’s best to check the current arrangements in advance.
