Radmer an der Stube lies about seven kilometres off the Eisenbundesstraße B115 between Eisenerz and Hieflau. The Radmer Valley lies between the Eisenerzer Alps and the Gesäuse Mountains and encompasses mountains, alpine pastures, forests, and streams. For planning your trip, two distinct focuses come to the fore: the long history of mining and architecture, and routes into the mountain landscape. If you are looking for a base for your stay, consider whether you would like to focus on cultural attractions or a mountain or cycling tour.

Copper History and Culture in Radmer

At the Radmer Copper Show Mine, the history of copper mining in the Radmer Valley dates back around 3,000 years. From 1996, volunteers restored the so-called Paradeisstollen, together with its associated tunnels, shafts, and workings, and opened the site to the public. The underground tour begins with Austria’s smallest mine railway, which the museum association describes as unique in the world. Check the current operating arrangements before you travel.

The Baroque pilgrimage church of Saint Anthony of Padua in Radmer an der Stube was built in 1602 by Emperor Ferdinand II. Inside, stucco decorates the ceiling, alongside frescoes by an unknown artist. You can arrange church tours by telephone. If you would like to visit the church as part of a guided tour, confirm the appointment before your visit.

Listed buildings are also part of the local cultural heritage. The former manor house, known as the GroĂźhaus, at Radmer an der Stube 19 is protected as a historic monument by official decree. The Way of the Cross, with its chapels and war memorial at Radmer an der Stube 9, is also protected. These two sites offer specific points of interest for a cultural walk, while the mining history and church each provide their own themes for planning your trip.

Routes and Mountain Tours

The Habsburg Mile is a family-friendly circular trail through Radmer that combines history, culture, and nature. Several stops highlight the high valley’s close connection with the House of Habsburg. This themed route complements the mountain tours: it leads through Radmer and connects different aspects of the village, rather than focusing on just one building.

Böse Mauer in Radmer is a panoramic summit in the Eisenerzer Alps, with far-reaching views across the surrounding mountains of the Hochschwab and Gesäuse regions. The Lugauer offers a different kind of tour: its traverse runs from Radmer an der Stube over the northeast flank to the eastern summit. The connecting ridge includes exposed climbing sections, some secured with fixed cables. The destinations therefore differ in their described features: Böse Mauer is all about the views, while the Lugauer offers a summit traverse with climbing sections. Check current conditions before setting out on a mountain tour.

A specific route is also described for mountain bikes. It runs through the village of Radmer before branching off towards Finstergraben and Radmerhals. The route to Radmerhals involves a challenging climb of around 800 metres in elevation. After the turn-off towards Radmerhals, the route follows a forest road for about eight kilometres, with steep, challenging climbs leading to a high point at around 1,300 metres. Check current route conditions before setting out. When choosing a base for your stay, you can weigh up whether you would like to focus on culture and local history, a route through Radmer, or a mountain or cycling tour.
