Wundschuh offers several points of interest for a stay: nature and local history at the ponds, architectural history at Neuschloß, and a themed trail linking village chapels and the parish church.

Ponds, protected area and circular trail

The bodies of water now known as the Wundschuh Ponds were created in 1442 as part of the further development of the farmstead known as “Viehhofen.” The date places their creation in the 15th century and makes the ponds a point of interest both for local history and for observing nature.

Neuteich, located in the municipality of Wundschuh, has been designated European protected area No. 45, “Wundschuh-Neuteich,” since 2017. This gives Neuteich a specific connection to a protected area, alongside the historical development of the pond landscape.

The circular hike at the Wundschuh Ponds passes through a landscape of dark forests and green meadows; the Wundschuh Ponds nature reserve forms part of the trail’s natural setting. Those who enjoy combining scenery with exercise will find a different focus here from the village’s architectural and church history.

Neuschloß and the Kraftquellenweg

Neuschloß lies south of Wundschuh. The building originated as a two-storey Baroque structure dating from the mid-18th century. Between 1804 and 1809, a third storey was added to the main building. This sequence shows two clearly distinct construction phases: the Baroque origins and a later extension of the main building.

In the village, the Kraftquellenweg trail, marked with quotation boards, leads from the village chapels to the parish church. The boards are part of the trail’s design; its starting and finishing points connect the route with the village churches. Unlike the pond circuit, this trail focuses on the route between the village chapels and the parish church, while the hike by the ponds foregrounds the forest and meadow landscape.

Agriculture and crafts

At the Reczek adventure farm, you can experience the changes in agriculture from the past to the present at close quarters, whatever the weather. This gives agriculture its own place alongside Wundschuh’s nature and architectural history highlights.

The Krippenfreunde Kaiserwald offer basket-weaving courses, palm-bush binding, lantern nativity scene making and nativity scene construction courses for children. The activities cover a range of craft techniques. If you would like to attend a course, please confirm the dates in advance.

Getting to the circular hike

Wundschuh is part of the Graz Südwest bus network. For current connections, the municipality refers visitors to BusBahnBim. The circular hike at the Wundschuh Ponds can be reached by public transport via the Wundschuh Hauptplatz bus stop. Check the connection and stop details before travelling, particularly if you plan to make the circular hike a fixed part of your itinerary.

This provides a practical distinction for planning your trip: the pond circuit combines scenery with a designated protected-area connection, while Neuschloß and the Kraftquellenweg offer different historical highlights. You can decide which of these perspectives best suits your search for a holiday apartment based on the focus you want for your stay.
