Semriach is home to striking natural and cultural sites: underground in the Lurgrotte, along the Kesselfall Gorge and at historic sites across the municipality. Other options include alpaca hikes, horseback riding and local beekeeping. When planning your trip, it is worth looking at the details: they help you decide whether a cave, gorge, cultural heritage or a particular experience should be the focus.
Lurgrotte, Gorge and Mountains
The Lurgrotte Semriach is considered Austria’s largest stalactite cave. The dimensions of the Great Dome are particularly impressive: it is 120 metres long, 80 metres wide and 40 metres high. You can explore the cave on well-developed paths as part of a guided tour lasting around 70 minutes. This gives you a concrete time estimate for planning; the visit is described as a guided exploration.
The municipality is home to five mountains over 1,000 metres high: Schöckl at 1,445 metres, Fragnerberg at 1,109 metres, Rinnweberkogel at 1,041 metres, Hochtrötsch at 1,239 metres and Windhofkogel at 1,064 metres. Schöckl is the highest of the five, while Rinnweberkogel is the lowest.
The Kesselfall Gorge offers a different natural setting and is a protected natural monument. The path through the gorge crosses numerous stairways and bridges and includes a walkable waterfall. This makes the route a different kind of experience from the guided cave exploration: here, the route itself, along with the stairways and bridges, shapes the visit. When comparing the two places, both the type of exploration and the features described are useful to consider.
Outdoor Experiences with Animals
Alpaka Zottlerhof offers alpaca hikes, with a picnic available on request. Yoga on the alpaca pasture is also offered. The two activities have different focuses: on the hike, you move alongside alpacas, while yoga takes place in the pasture. A picnic is not included automatically, but can be arranged on request.
Islandpferdehof Hoyos offers trail rides and riding lessons. For anyone interested in horses, it provides a second animal-related activity alongside the alpaca hikes. Another outdoor option is the Semriach Erlebnisbad, a family-friendly outdoor swimming pool with a slide and pool café. These activities range from exercise and encounters with animals to spending time at the outdoor pool, making them clearly different from nature trails and guided cave tours.
Church, Chapel and Local History
The Gothic parish church of Saint Aegidius stands on the site of an ancient Roman church dating back to 1100. The Ulrichsbrunn Chapel was built over a spring in 1720; the spring is believed to have healing powers for eye complaints. This traditional belief is part of the chapel’s story: it describes a belief about the spring, not a medical claim.
The Roman Tomb is a Roman burial mound restored in situ and is considered the only one of its kind in Austria. The Semriach Fire Brigade Museum offers a different historical focus. It displays numerous items of equipment belonging to the Semriach Volunteer Fire Brigade, dating from its founding in 1891 onward. Archaeological heritage and the history of the local fire brigade thus stand alongside the religious sites as distinct themes for a stay.
Kunsthalle K2 is located in Semriach’s market square and presents new exhibitions at regular intervals. If you would like to include it in your plans, check the exhibition dates separately. This lets you plan your visit around the exhibitions actually on display, without assuming a specific date.
Honey and Beekeeping
Imkerei Thir has a long family tradition of keeping bees in a nature-friendly way. It sells various types of honey directly on site, including blossom honey, creamed honey and forest honey. This adds a local food experience to Semriach’s natural and cultural sites.
