Kleinstübing is best known for the Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing. When planning your trip, you can choose from cultural attractions as well as practical starting points and routes: one stage of the Graz Mountain Region Hiking Trail begins here, a station on the S1 line is located in the district, and other trails pass through Kleinstübing or list it as a destination. The castle and Roman-era settlement offer additional points of interest for those interested in monuments.

Open-air museum and traditional crafts

The Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing comprises more than 100 historic buildings and is one of the ten largest museums of its kind in Europe. Kleinstübing is best known for this museum; its scale and many historic buildings give the place a distinctive cultural character.

Visitors can also try their hand at traditional crafts there, such as making shingles, baking bread, doughnuts and strudel, carving spoons or spinning. The hands-on programme may vary. Before your visit, check which activities will be offered.

Two protected monuments

Stübing Castle and the Roman-era settlement of Kleinstübing also offer different points of interest in cultural history. The castle is protected as a monument by official order under Section 3. The Roman-era settlement is likewise protected as an archaeological monument by official order under Section 3. Together with the historic buildings of the open-air museum, these represent three distinct themes: the museum, the castle and the archaeological settlement.

Hiking trails and getting there

There is an S1 station in the Kleinstübing district. The fourth stage of the Graz Mountain Region Hiking Trail also begins in Kleinstübing. The “Around the Rannach to Kleinstübing” tour starts at Kleinstübing station and uses the Gustmobil shuttle to the GH Martinelli/Steinmetzwirt stop, the tour’s starting point. For planning purposes, the station, shuttle stop and tour start are separate points. Check timetables, shuttle rules and tour details before setting off.

Pilgrimage Tour 742 passes through Kleinstübing and follows the Mur Cycle Path from Kleinstübing to the Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing. The Pfaffenkogelsteig trail can be reached by bike via the Mur Cycle Path to Kleinstübing. The Mur Cycle Path therefore features in two different route contexts: as part of the pilgrimage tour to the museum and as a cycling route to the Pfaffenkogelsteig.

Scenery and another cultural attraction

Around Kleinstübing, the nature reserve surrounding the Pfaffenkogel and its summit offer photo opportunities and views of the Mur flowing at the foot of the mountain.

In Deutschfeistritz, the Sensenwerk offers an insight into industrial history. A guided tour lasting about an hour sets the waterwheel and hammers in motion. As visitor programmes and access arrangements may change, check the latest information if you plan to include this attraction.

Choose accommodation to suit your travel plans

When looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether culture, a hike or cycling access will shape your stay. The station and Gustmobil connection are practical reference points for getting to the Rannach tour; check the latest timetables and rules for the S1 and shuttle. This will help you tailor your search for a holiday apartment to the activities you actually plan.
