At the foot of the Hochschwab, Sankt Ilgen combines a striking mountain backdrop with clearly distinct hiking and cultural themes. The Hochschwab reaches 2,277 metres above sea level; from Sankt Ilgen, well-marked hiking trails lead to the summit. There is also a themed circular trail, the KarlschĂĽtt nature reserve and evidence of ecclesiastical history. This offers different travel-planning options: a named summit destination, a water-themed trail, a specifically located natural area, and history connected with the village and the Hochschwab region.

Mountain trails and different types of routes

The hiking trails from Sankt Ilgen to the Hochschwab summit are very well marked. Nevertheless, it is advisable to check trail conditions before setting out on a specific hike. The markings help with orientation, while the current conditions remain decisive for each individual tour. This lets you combine the summit destination with concrete, conditions-aware tour planning.

Another type of route is the WasserWanderWunderWeg (Water Hiking Wonderland Trail). This circular walking trail is suitable for pushchairs and starts right outside the Alpenhotel der Bodenbauer. The route then follows the forest road and marked hiking trail 839 to the Wasser-Spirit-Station. The trail is accessible from the beginning of May until the onset of winter; as conditions may change from year to year, check them before setting out. In terms of destinations, there are two distinct options: the Hochschwab summit and the Wasser-Spirit-Station.

Natural area and Hochschwab region

The nature-related features also vary in scale. The KarlschĂĽtt nature reserve lies at the outlet of the Karlgraben in the Sankt Ilgen area. KarlschĂĽtt locates the natural setting in a specific section of the Karlgraben, while the Hochschwab provides the broader mountain setting. This makes it possible to understand the landscape both through a specifically named protected area and through the mountain massif.

Museum: people, nature and water

The Hochschwab Museum presents changing exhibitions about the relationship between people and nature in the Hochschwab region. Topics include the “water treasure,” historical development, the water supply operations of Zentral-Wasserversorgung Hochschwab Süd Ges.m.b.H., and the high quality of Hochschwab water. Water is therefore presented not only as a landscape feature, but also in the context of regional history and water supply. The museum is housed in a farmhouse, about 300 years old at its core, which has been professionally restored in accordance with heritage conservation principles.

St. Giles Church and local history

St. Giles Church in Sankt Ilgen also connects local and church history. When it was founded in the late Middle Ages, Saint Giles became the namesake of Sankt Ilgen and the valley. The church has a valuable Gothic bell cast by Mert von Friesach. It has a diameter of 49 centimetres, weighs 80 kilograms and bears the year 1475. Thus, the story behind the village’s name sits alongside a specifically dated example of ecclesiastical craftsmanship.
