Mariazell offers a range of options for your stay: the Basilica brings together devotion and art, while the Local History Museum explores nature, history and regional topics. Basilica: devotional image, high altar and opening hours
The Basilica’s central devotional image is a late Romanesque statue of the Mother of God carrying the Child on her right arm. The key spatial and artistic features are also clearly identified: the spiritual centre is the Chapel of Grace, and the artistic centre is the high altar by Fischer von Erlach. The devotional image, chapel and high altar thus reveal different aspects of the Basilica—from the image of Mary to the design of the church interior.
Opening hours vary by season. From approximately 1 November to 30 April, the Basilica is open daily from 7:30 am to 7:00 pm; from 1 May to 31 October, it is open daily from approximately 7:30 am to 8:00 pm. As official opening hours may change, check them before your visit. The seasonal information also helps distinguish between planning a stay during the winter half of the year and one between May and October.
Local History Museum: nature, pilgrimage history and regional topics
The natural history museum at Mariazell’s Local History Museum offers insight into the diversity of fauna and flora, as well as the early history of the pilgrimage site and its surroundings. Nature is therefore presented alongside Mariazell’s history as a place of pilgrimage. The museum also has numerous exhibition rooms covering various topics related to the Mariazell region, including a hunting museum and faithfully restored alpine huts and woodcutters’ huts. The subjects range from natural history and the town’s early history to hunting and the restored huts.
The building itself is part of the historical story: it dates back to the 17th century and formerly served as a civic hospital. A visit to the Local History Museum therefore brings today’s exhibitions together with the building’s former purpose. This distinguishes it from the Basilica as a cultural attraction, where the main features are the devotional image, Chapel of Grace and high altar.
Hikes: Bürgeralpe and the Buschnigg Trail
The circular hike “Around Mariazell’s Bürgeralpe (694 and 692)” starts in Mariazell and leads to Bürgeralpe. The 9.0-kilometre loop is listed as taking 3 hours and 45 minutes, with an ascent of 469 metres and a descent of 433 metres. The highest point is at 1,266 metres. Another, shorter hiking option to Bürgeralpe takes about an hour and climbs the mountain on switchbacks beneath the cable-car supports. These details describe different routes: a circular hike with a stated distance and elevation gain and loss, and the shortest hiking route to Bürgeralpe, with an approximate duration.
A different route description applies to the Buschnigg Trail. It starts in Mariazell’s main square and passes through a wooded landscape to the forest promenade. Its described route therefore differs from the Bürgeralpe trails: here, the starting point and destination are specified, while the Bürgeralpe routes focus on the climb or the circular hike. No walking time or distance is given for the Buschnigg Trail.
Regional route and railway
The Styrian Mariazell Trail covers a wider region. It runs from the wine country of southern Styria to the alpine mountain landscape around Mariazell. Unlike the circular hike to Bürgeralpe or the Buschnigg Trail, it links two different landscapes.
