Kapfenberg offers several distinct ways to explore cultural and natural themes. The museum focuses on the city’s development, the Rettenwand Cave showcases stalactite formations, and the castle and old town offer further historical perspectives. These differences can help you plan your stay: you can focus on exhibitions, a guided cave visit or exploring historic sites.
City History at the Museum
The Kapfenberg City Museum documents the city’s cultural history across an exhibition area of about 350 m². The exhibits range from Neolithic finds from the Rettenwand Cave to the history of the Böhler stainless steel plant. This means the story of Kapfenberg’s past encompasses both early archaeological finds and industrial history.
The tour of Kapfenberg Museum begins with prehistory and early history, continues through the Middle Ages and the modern era, and also includes a 1920s museum kitchen. The sequence makes it possible to follow different eras during a single museum visit; the kitchen provides a tangible link to the 1920s. Kapfenberg Museum originated as a cave museum. Founded in the 1920s, it was established to display archaeological finds from the Rettenwand Cave. The connection to the cave therefore goes back to the museum’s origins.
Rettenwand Cave: Stalactite Formations and Guided Tours
Kapfenberg’s Rettenwand Cave is an electrically lit stalactite cave. Along the developed visitor trail, you can see stalactites, stalagmites and stalactite columns. While the museum focuses on cultural history, the cave draws attention to natural formations. Visits take place with a trained cave guide. The walk from the car park by the PEWAG plant on the B 20 to the cave takes about 20 minutes. As trail conditions may change, check them before your visit.
Oberkapfenberg Castle
Oberkapfenberg Castle is a destination high above Kapfenberg. It houses a castle falconry as well as exhibition and event spaces. Castle tours and medieval games are offered to visitors. The “Grenzgänge” multimedia exhibition offers a virtual journey through time with crusaders and alchemists and tells the story of the castle. This provides several different ways to explore: a guided tour, a multimedia exhibition and an event format. If medieval games are important to your stay, check in advance whether they are taking place during your trip.
Historic Features of the Old Town
You can also explore the old town on a dedicated walking tour. It features 25 information boards about the city’s historic features. This way, you can encounter Kapfenberg’s history not only in the museum and at the castle, but also along a walk through the old town. The boards provide clear points of reference for the tour’s historical themes.
