From the height of the Krimml Waterfalls to the erosion formations of the Leitenkammerklamm, Krimml showcases water on different scales. The House of Water adds an interactive exhibition to this view of the landscape; there is also a valley hike, a cycling route and a winter activity. For travel planning, the specific walking times and the seasonal access conditions at the waterfalls are especially important.
Waterfalls and Water Exhibition
The Krimml Waterfalls have a height of 380 metres and are considered the highest waterfalls in Europe. The path to them is accessible to wheelchair users and people with mobility impairments only as far as the lowest waterfall. As access conditions may change seasonally, check them before your visit.
The House of Water is located directly opposite the Waterfall Center. Its interactive “Faces of Water” exhibition traces water’s journey from mist and haze through droplets and snow crystals, as well as streams and seas, to the eternal ice of Antarctica. As a counterpart to the waterfalls, the exhibition focuses on a sequence of forms of water: it is not only water as a feature of the landscape that takes centre stage, but also its journey to the eternal ice.
Krimmler Achental and Leitenkammerklamm
The Krimmler Achental is the longest and highest-altitude valley in the Venediger Group. Alpine farming has been practised there since the Middle Ages. The valley’s length and elevation put it in geographical context; alpine farming adds a long history of land use to this picture. The easy hike through the valley to the Krimmler Tauernhaus takes about 3½ hours.
The Leitenkammerklamm was shaped by the powerful Wildgerlosbach glacier stream, which formed potholes and erosion features. Potholes are basins scoured out of the rock and, together with the erosion features, point to the stream’s shaping force. Viewing platforms make the gorge easily accessible. From the Finkau inn, the path leads through a spruce forest and takes about 30 minutes on foot. The times given cover different durations: the walk from Finkau takes about 30 minutes, while the easy hike through the valley to the Tauernhaus takes about 3½ hours.
Cycling Route and Winter Activity
The signposted Tauern Cycle Path branches off the main road to the left just beyond the railway station and crosses the Krimmler Ache. Its first stage starts in Krimml and heads towards Mittersill. The turn-off beyond the station is a specific landmark, while the stage information indicates the direction towards Mittersill. As route details may change, check the current signs before setting out.
Hochkrimml has a panoramic cross-country ski trail with views of the mountain scenery of the Zillertal Alps and the Hohe Tauern. This adds a cross-country skiing option alongside waterfalls and hiking trails. The 200-kilometre Pinzgau Trail is also mentioned in connection with the cross-country skiing offered by Krimml’s WinterWunderWelt.
