Discover Ebenau through its mill landscape and industrial history. The Mill Hiking Trail leads to the Plötz Natural Monument; a historic water tunnel, the Brass Trail and the museum in the Fürstenstöckl shed light on other aspects of the town’s history. Depending on your interests, you can focus on the landscape, historic technology, or the history of the museum and buildings.

Mill Trail and Plötz

The Ebenau Mill Hiking Trail starts at the Waschl Mill right in Ebenau and leads to the Plötz Natural Monument, a gorge with rock pools and an impressive waterfall. The trail returns to Ebenau via the footbridge over the reservoir. A visit to the Waschl Mill is possible by prior arrangement.

There are seven historic farm mills in total in Ebenau and at the Plötz Natural Monument. The mill theme thus connects the town with its surrounding landscape, while the gorge, rock pools and waterfall shape the trail’s natural appeal. The Waschl Mill is the specific starting point for the hike; Plötz is its landscape destination.

Hydropower and Industrial History

In the center of Ebenau, opposite the municipal office, the historic walk-through water tunnel is located in the Schwarzaubach Gorge. The 53.3-meter-long tunnel channeled water from the Schwarzaubach Gorge to the waterwheels of the hammer mill. Its function makes the former technical use of water tangible through a specific structure.

The Brass Trail has a different focus: as a themed trail in Ebenau, it tells the story of the town’s industrial history. By comparison, the water tunnel illustrates one specific technical function: supplying water to the hammer mill’s wheels. The Historic Water Tunnel is open seasonally from April 1 through the end of October. Check whether the tunnel is currently accessible before visiting.

Museum, Church and Local History

The museum in the Fürstenstöckl exhibits historic weapons and firearms that were once made at the Ebenau factory. From June to September, the museum is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; guided tours start on the hour. As opening hours are seasonal, check them again before setting out.

Ebenau Parish Church was built in 1698/99 by Archbishop Johann E. Count Thun and dedicated to Saint Florian in 1704. Its construction and dedication dates offer a distinct perspective on local history, alongside the industrial history of the water tunnel and the collection in the Fürstenstöckl.

Visiting Hours and Activities

The weekly market is held every Thursday in front of the Zenkersaal in Ebenau. This coincides with a day when the museum is also open during its season: Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. If you’re planning a visit that takes in both, coordinate your weekday with the museum’s seasonal opening hours.

Guided canyoning in the Almbach in Ebenau is suitable for beginners and advanced participants alike. Availability depends on the season; it’s best to check the dates before your trip.
