One hour on foot or just under two: walking trails in Großgmain vary considerably in how long they take. Cultural and historical themes and nature experiences offer further ways to shape your stay. The time estimates help you distinguish a shorter loop from a longer walk and fit some exercise into your day as you see fit.
Culture between castle ruins and the open-air museum
Plainburg Castle, also known as “Salzbüchsl”, is one of Austria’s oldest castle ruins. The Salzburg Open-Air Museum, by contrast, focuses on six centuries of Salzburg’s rural past. The two places therefore offer different cultural and historical perspectives: one is a single castle ruin, while the other takes a broad look at rural Salzburg over time.
A 1.7 km stretch of the museum railway runs through the open-air museum grounds. A round trip from “Flachgau” station near the museum entrance to the “Pongau” terminus and back takes about 30 minutes. This manageable time frame helps you factor the ride into your museum visit; it refers to the round trip.
The Marien pilgrimage church also offers an art-historical connection: it is associated with a Gothic panel painting from 1499, attributed to the “Master of Großgmain”. Its date, Gothic classification and attribution provide a specific historical reference point, without implying that the painting is part of the church interior.
Walks to suit your schedule
The Weisse Kreuz / Randersbergrundweg is a 3.4 km walking trail that takes about an hour. The Solestrecke is longer, at 5.1 km, and takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. That makes a difference of 1.7 km and around 45 minutes of walking between the two options. If you have about an hour for a walk, you can opt for the shorter time frame; the Solestrecke allows more time for a longer walk.
Another way to explore is the Großgmainer Wissenspfad, a free digital adventure walk for locals and visitors. It can be used individually at any time. In this respect, it differs from the two walking trails, each of which has a specified distance and walking time. Its availability at any time gives you flexibility in fitting it into your stay.
Nature park and outdoor pool
The Salzburg Open-Air Museum is located in the heart of the Untersberg Nature Park, close to the city of Salzburg. The nature park is also home to a Kneipp facility at the foot of the Untersberg.
Another specific option for swimming is Großgmain’s outdoor pool, which has a 25 m swimming pool and a heated children’s pool. The features of these pools offer two different points to consider when planning your visit. Großgmain’s attractions therefore include not only castle ruins, a museum, walking trails and a nature park, but also an outdoor pool with the facilities listed above.
