A distinctive villa district, a cultural trail and nearby destinations reveal different sides of Tullnerbach-Lawies. When planning a stay, you can tailor your priorities to your interests, whether local history, outdoor activities or views: the villas and historic buildings tell the story of the town’s development, while trails and viewpoints offer different highlights for visitors.

Villa District and Cultural Trail

Lawies is characterised by a collection of historicist villas dating from 1875 to 1910, along with their large gardens. Between 1870 and 1900, 45 villas, a hotel and two commercial buildings were built in Upper Lawies. The time periods can be considered side by side: the villas shaped the character of Lawies up to 1910, while the figure of 45 villas describes the development of Upper Lawies between 1870 and 1900. Together, they illustrate both the broader architectural timeline and a specific measure of this district’s development.

The Tullnerbach Cultural Trail also takes in individual sites. A stop dedicated to Richard Genée is at the corner of Egererstraße and Genéestraße; Professor-Rudolf-Pleban-Park is another stop along the trail. Both provide specific places to visit along the cultural trail.

The Norbertinum is another important site in the area’s architectural history. From 1881, it was built as an extensive four-wing historicist complex. It served as a teaching and educational institution run by the Catholic Orphan Aid Association and was led by the Congregation of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. The building’s architecture and former educational role offer two different ways to appreciate it: its expansive form and its historical purpose.

The former Tullnerbach municipal office also combines architectural and administrative history. The protected building once housed the municipal administration, post office and gendarmerie under one roof. Today, the former municipal office contains a historic council chamber, restored murals and a former gendarmerie detention cell. The building’s former functions sit alongside distinctive details of its interior.

Rail Travel and Getting Your Bearings

The starting point of the “Tut Gut!” Tullnerbach walking route can be reached by S-Bahn or train to Tullnerbach/Pressbaum station. The route passes through the Lawies villa district before continuing along the Karl-Ritter-Weg. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your visit, as current services may change. Tullnerbach-Pressbaum station is located in the village of Tullnerbach-Lawies in the Wiental valley.

The station’s history also helps you get your bearings: the original Tullnerbach station building no longer exists. Knabstraße, by the station, remains the actual centre of Lawies-Tullnerbach. These two details highlight different aspects: the former station building points to change, while Knabstraße’s central role describes the heart of the village.

Trails, Wienerwald Lake and Views

Near Wienerwald Lake, there is a promenade, a playground and skating area, and a beach volleyball court. Well-marked, well-maintained trails also run through the area and are used by walkers and recreational sports enthusiasts. The trails therefore appeal both to people looking for a walk and to recreational athletes. The facilities mentioned may change over time, so check current local information when making specific plans.

For far-reaching views, the Troppberg lookout tower offers a different highlight. From there, you can see Vienna, the Vienna Woods and Tulln, towards the Wachau, as well as the Alpine foothills, including Schneeberg and Ă–tscher. The Troppberg lookout tower is freely accessible year-round; check conditions before your visit, as they may change. Together with the villa district, the cultural trail stops and the paths by Wienerwald Lake, it offers a range of options, from architectural history and finding your way around the village to spending time outdoors.
