The Mauerbach Charterhouse and the trails in the western Wienerwald give a stay in Mauerbach two distinct focuses: culture and outdoor activity. You can plan your visit around a scheduled guided tour or choose hiking routes by length. For planning, it is worth considering these options separately: at the Charterhouse, the focus is on history and tour and event dates; on the trails, route lengths and specific routes take centre stage.

The Charterhouse and Local History

The Charterhouse was founded in 1314 by Frederick the Fair. Between 1616 and 1631, it was redesigned in the Baroque style. Another dated milestone in local history concerns the Church of the Assumption of Mary: it was established as a parish church in 1783. These dates mark different stages in local history: the founding of the monastery, its Baroque redesign, and its establishment as a parish church. Roman stones from Vienna-Hernals are permanently displayed in the cloister in front of the Mauerbach Archaeology Centre. You can view them free of charge and in their original colours during the Charterhouse's opening hours. The Charterhouse's opening hours determine when you can visit; check them in advance.

Guided Tours and Cultural Events

Guided tours of the Charterhouse take place every Sunday at 3:00 p.m. As the schedule may change, check the date in advance if you want to plan your visit around it. At the Open Charterhouse Days, held twice a year, lime burning and traditional crafts are demonstrated in hands-on workshops; the specific event dates vary. Early music concerts take place in the Baroque rooms, including the monastery church, refectory, Imperial Halls and Imperial Garden. Individual concert dates also vary. The events therefore differ in how they are scheduled: the Sunday tour has a regular weekly time, while the Open Charterhouse Days and concerts are planned around individual event dates.

Choose a Hike by Route Length

The tut-gut hiking trail network in Mauerbach comprises three routes of 4.8 km, 8.7 km and 14.7 km. All three start at the car park by Mauerbach Charterhouse. The shortest and longest routes differ by 9.9 km, and their shared starting point makes them easy to compare. The Mauerbach–Tulbing circular hike is easy and family-friendly; it leads from Mauerbach via Hischengarten to Tulbinger Kogel and back to Mauerbach. When planning, two types of information complement each other: the precise distances and shared starting point of the tut-gut routes, and the route and difficulty rating of the Mauerbach–Tulbing circular hike. Trail conditions can change; check them before setting off.

Local History on Foot and Woodland Scenery

A guided walk from Kreuzbrunn to the Church of the Assumption of Mary combines local history with the small monuments and fieldside shrines along the route; dates are announced separately or arranged as needed. Unlike a guided tour of the Charterhouse, this walk follows a route, making the monuments along the way part of the local history. Mauerbach is located in the western Wienerwald and has a wooded landscape with numerous hiking trails and cycling routes. This means that, alongside cultural activities, you can also include outdoor exercise in your stay.
