Schwadorf combines a long pilgrimage tradition with numerous historic crosses and a landscape of meadows and fields. Cycling is also one of the local attractions: the Römerland Carnuntum Cycling Route 54 is signposted in both directions. When planning your visit, you can choose between cultural history, walks, and a cycling tour.

Pilgrimages and the Parish Church

The Church of the Assumption of Mary dates from before 1200. In the 17th century, Schwadorf developed into a pilgrimage destination thanks to the famous image of the Virgin Mary, “Maria Hilf” (Mary, Help of Christians). The church is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; check the opening hours again before your arrival.

Historic Crosses and Monuments

Several crosses commemorate different periods and benefactors. The Marian Column, also known as the “Community Column,” was erected in 1595. In 1624, citizen and master baker Hans Krapf had the Bakers’ Cross Column erected with his wife, Rosina. The Plague Cross Column was erected in 1674 on the site of a former plague cemetery: the community dedicated it to the Most Holy Trinity. The Gallows Cross was erected in 1770 with an image of Our Lady of Sorrows. The names and dedications show that these monuments have different religious associations.

Their locations can also be distinguished by specific roads and directions. The stone Butchers’ Cross was erected by butcher Franz Ferschel in 1734 among the vineyards on the border with Wr. Herberg. The High Cross, also called the “Tall Cross,” stands directly on the B10 toward Schwechat, about two kilometers outside the built-up area. The Trinity Column was erected in 1700 and renovated several times. It stands on State Road 156 toward Wr. Herberg, about two kilometers from the built-up area.

The Guardian Angel Cross was originally a wooden cross on the road to Rauchenwarth. The War Memorial was erected in 1923 in the old cemetery in front of the parish church; the cemetery had been closed in 1814. Taken together, the dates mentioned here range from the Marian Column, built in 1595, to the War Memorial of 1923.

Castle History and Art

A castle on the west bank of the Fischa is documented in Schwadorf in 1331. The former fortress of Schwadorf Castle was surrounded by curtain walls and moats. Another historical connection can be found in art: in 1835, Adalbert Stifter depicted an estate in his oil painting “The Factory Garden in Schwadorf.” The castle, the former fortress, and the painting highlight different aspects—medieval history, fortification, and an artistic depiction of the town.

Walks, Cycling, and Indoor Swimming

The expanses of meadows and fields invite you to take long walks. Schwadorf Forest extends into the municipal area of Rauchenwarth, a pilgrimage destination with the Bründl Church. This is a distinct landscape feature alongside the local pilgrimage history. For cyclists, the signposted Römerland Carnuntum Cycling Route 54 offers another way to experience the surroundings: the section leading to Schwadorf runs along a paved farm track.

Another leisure option is the Schwadorf Indoor Swimming Pool. It was renovated in 2018; the facilities include a modern swimming hall and a café with an outdoor seating garden. If you are planning a visit, check the current opening hours. In Schwadorf, historic sites, walks, and cycling sit alongside the indoor pool as different options to choose from.
