The Marchfeld Canal crosses the municipal area of Gerasdorf near Vienna for about five kilometres. It also serves as a clear point of reference for two different routes: the “Dampfross & Drahtesel” cycling loop passes through the municipality, while hiking stage 21 of the “rundumadum” trail follows the canal and passes the bathing pond. The area also has a local history marked by traces of the Middle Ages and a fire brigade collection. When choosing a stay in Gerasdorf, it is therefore worth considering whether cycling, hiking or culture is your main focus.

Cycling and Hiking along the Marchfeld Canal

The “Dampfross & Drahtesel” cycling loop is 50 kilometres long and passes through Gerasdorf near Vienna. Stop 15 is the Marchfeld Canal in Gerasdorf. The stated distance refers to the entire loop; the canal marks a single point within the municipality. Gerasdorf railway station is a useful reference point for getting there: the loop is located there and is also easily accessible by bus route 510. Check the connections for the day of your visit in advance and time your arrival to suit your planned start.

The perspective is different when hiking: stage 21 of the “rundumadum” trail follows the Marchfeld Canal and passes the bathing pond. Here, the canal is part of the route, whereas on the cycling loop it is designated as a stop. So if you are choosing between the two options, you are comparing a cycling loop with a specified total distance and a hiking trail with a specific route.

Gerasdorf Bathing Pond: Plan Access in Advance

There is a motor skills park at Gerasdorf bathing pond. The bathing pond itself is not open to the public: access is reserved exclusively for people who have purchased an access card. The fact that the hiking stage passes the pond does not mean that the bathing pond is freely accessible. If you plan to visit it, check the access conditions before your visit.

Church and Fire Brigade History

The church in Gerasdorf, dedicated to the Apostles Peter and Paul, dates back to the 13th century; it is mentioned in a tithe register as early as 1258. A Gothic church with an east tower in Gerasdorf was destroyed during the Hussite invasion of 1429 and subsequently rebuilt. The term “east-tower church” refers to the tower’s position on the eastern side of the church building. Its early origins, written mention and reconstruction after its destruction offer different historical reference points for the area.

The Gerasdorf Fire Brigade Collection displays historical fire brigade artefacts at the fire station. A guided tour offers insights into the structure of the modern fire service and its history. The collection thus complements the church history with an institutional perspective: historical objects are presented alongside an overview of modern operations.
