Zagging offers two circular routes of different lengths: the 7.5 km Wind Turbine Trail and the approximately 30 km Fladnitztal Cycle Route. One is a circular hiking trail, the other a circular cycling route. When planning your time here, you can start by choosing according to route length and your preferred activity. The bicycle types and path surfaces mentioned also differ.

The Wind Turbine Trail and Cellar Lane

The Wind Turbine Trail crosses gently rolling terrain between the Fladnitztal and Traisental valleys and passes through Zagging’s Cellar Lane. The 7.5 km loop thus combines a clearly defined route with a stretch through the cellar lane. From the trail, you may see views of the Traisental valley and Herzogenburg, as well as as far as the Danube and the Wagram region. Whether these distant views are visible depends on the weather and atmospheric conditions.

The Wind Turbine Trail is also suitable for trekking bikes and mountain bikes. For the most part, it follows surfaced gravel paths, with some sections on paved paths. As path surfaces can change after maintenance work, it is advisable to check the current route description before setting out.

Zagging’s Cellar Lane is suitable for easy walks with the whole family. It is also part of the Wind Turbine Trail. If you are also planning to visit a business in the cellar lane, access may vary depending on the season. A walk along the lane and the full loop are therefore two options of different lengths for exploring Zagging on foot.

The Fladnitztal Cycle Route

The Fladnitztal Cycle Route is an approximately 30 km circular cycling route between the Traisental and Dunkelsteinerwald regions, passing through the municipality of Obritzberg-Rust. Following the Fladnitz stream, it passes through the wine-growing village of Zagging in the direction of Statzendorf. In addition to being a longer loop, its route offers a different landscape and orientation to the local area than the Wind Turbine Trail.

The Fladnitztal Cycle Route is suitable for trekking bikes and city bikes. Along the way, it runs partly on regional and municipal roads and partly on surfaced farm roads. The distinction is useful when choosing a route by bicycle type: trekking bikes are suitable for both routes; mountain bikes are specified for the Wind Turbine Trail and city bikes for the Fladnitztal Cycle Route. When planning your route, you can also compare the Wind Turbine Trail’s 7.5 km with the Fladnitztal Cycle Route’s approximate length of 30 km.

Zagging Chapel and practical information

Zagging Chapel is one of the sights in the market town of Obritzberg-Rust. It is a timber-framed building on the east side of Landesstraße 100, also known as Römerstraße, at Ziegelofen 1. Its construction and precise location offer another local landmark to consider when planning your trip, in addition to the two routes.

Parking is available directly beside a wind turbine at the Wind Turbine Trail information point. Check the parking situation when you arrive. If you use the Wind Turbine Trail as a cycling route, also take note of the information about the paths and their surfaces. For the Fladnitztal Cycle Route, the approximate total length, the bicycle types listed and the different kinds of roads and paths can help you fit the ride into your day’s plans.
