Maria Anzbach lies in the western Vienna Woods and offers a range of ways to shape your stay: a pilgrimage church, traces of history on Buchberg and hiking routes through the landscape. This lets you make culture and walking routes the focus of your trip, rather than reducing the place to a single excursion destination.

Buchberg: History, Route and Panoramic Views

Buchberg is home to a ring-wall complex from the Late Bronze Age, dating from 1200 to 800 BC.

The Cultura Trail Römerweg passes over Buchberg. The Buchbergwarte observation tower offers another perspective: it is 22.5 metres high and gives visitors an impressive panoramic view. The Buchberg area was opened to the public in 2002. This historical information records an earlier step; check current access arrangements before visiting.

Church Architecture and Oral Tradition

The pilgrimage church of Our Lady of Mercy is a fortified church dating from the 15th century. More specifically, it is a three-nave, four-bay hall church with a stepped profile, built in the second half of the 15th century, with stone and rib vaults. A nave is a longitudinal section of a church interior. The three naves lie side by side; the four bays are sections along the axis of the space. A bay is the space between two successive supports. In a stepped-profile church, the central nave is higher than the side aisles, so the building sections rise in steps. In a rib vault, ribs mark the lines between the vault surfaces; the term stone vault indicates the material.

Another historical trace concerns the Grafenhaus. According to oral tradition, it was the seat of the free nobles of Amicinesbach from 1090 to 1203. Together with the ring-wall complex and the church, this brings together different periods: the Bronze Age complex, the orally transmitted medieval history and a church building from the 15th century.

Hiking in the Western Vienna Woods

There are two useful landscape reference points for hiking: trails for holidaymakers and day-trippers run through the Anzbach valley, and Maria Anzbach also offers numerous hiking routes through the Vienna Woods.

One specifically named route is “Kohlreithberg via Pameth.” It starts at the “Marktplatz” in Maria Anzbach. Check that the route is available before setting out.

Advent Event

The traditional Advent market “Anzbacher Adventmärchen” takes place on the first Sunday of Advent and transforms the town centre into a magical Christmas world. If you are planning to visit Maria Anzbach at this time, the market offers a seasonal point of interest alongside the town’s cultural and hiking attractions. You can plan your trip around the date, which falls on the first Sunday of Advent.
