Traismauer combines Roman heritage with marked trails, cycling and relaxation along the Traisen. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between cultural offerings with seasonal or specified dates and outdoor activities. This lets you tailor your stay to history, exercise, wine or a mix of all three.

Roman History and Changing Exhibitions

In the crypt beneath Traismauer parish church, you can see remnants of the walls of the former headquarters of the Roman camp, the principia. They bear witness to its late antique reuse. Traismauer Castle also points to the Roman past: it was once the Roman cavalry fort of Augustianis. The seasonal “Traismaurer Schätze” exhibition at the castle displays Roman-era finds and runs from May to September.

The “Schützen und Archäologie” exhibition is currently on display in the Hungerturm. If you plan to visit, check before you travel whether it is still open. The Fine Art Gallery is housed in a listed building complex with an interior courtyard and garden courtyard at Wiener Straße 10. The building dates from the 15th century. The gallery’s program includes photography, painting, graphic art, music and literature; it may change.

Exhibitions by guest artists at the “Altes Schlosserhaus” change every six weeks. On specified dates, demonstrations are held in the old smithy, where visitors can also try their hand at blacksmithing. Confirm the dates if you are making a special trip for this. Another tradition has a fixed seasonal connection: the Traismaurer Nativity Play has been performed during Advent for over 200 years.

Trails Between the Town, Vineyards and Water

The Wechtl circular hiking trail starts right at Traismauer railway station. It leads through vineyards and fields, along a hollow way and into a mixed forest. The route crosses Venusberg, passes the mountain chapel and continues to ReutbĂĽhel. The trail is described as easy and well marked; its listed landmarks and changing terrain provide clear guidance for the hike.

The “Sprechende Römer” cultural trail follows a different route: this approximately 4 km themed trail runs through the town centre to the Danube promenade and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. It is signposted and can be travelled in either direction, on foot or by bike. You can choose according to your preferred focus: the Wechtl circular hiking trail passes through vineyards, fields and forest, while the cultural trail combines Roman themes with a route through town.

The Traismauer flood protection area borders directly on the town centre and is a local recreation area. Along the widened sections of the Traisen, visitors can go for a walk, enjoy some relaxing time and cool their feet in the water. For activities on the water, BOAT ADVENTURE at Traismauer Marina offers water skiing, banana boat, sofa and tube rides, as well as boat rentals. As the operator’s offerings may change, check before your visit.

Cycling and Regional Travel

The Traisental Cycle Path is a family-friendly and pilgrimage cycling route. From Traismauer, it runs through the Traisental-Danube region via St. Pölten, Lilienfeld and St. Aegyd am Neuwalde to Mariazell. For taking a bicycle on the train, the route from St. Pölten via Herzogenburg, Traismauer and Tulln to Vienna’s Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof is also relevant: all S-Bahn trains on this route have 10 bicycle spaces. As operating details and capacity may change, check the information before travelling.

Wine and a Traditional Heuriger Snack

Wine is another possible focus for a stay in Traismauer: you can picnic among the vines in a vineyard and enjoy wine and a traditional Heuriger snack. Participating wineries and packages may change. If this experience is central to your plans, ask about the current options in advance.
