The Lower Austrian Wayside Shrine Trail is a circular hiking route about 13 kilometres long, passing through all five cadastral communities of Inzersdorf ob der Traisen. It starts and ends at the village square in Inzersdorf. This makes the route clear: you return to your starting point rather than arriving at a different destination. The approximate length provides an initial guide for planning your day; you should also allow for breaks and your personal walking pace.

Another route connection leads to the Rampelkreuz in Inzersdorf. The Traisental section of the Austrian Way of St James runs through there. This gives you two different types of route to choose from: the circular hiking route through five cadastral communities and a section of the Way of St James associated with the Rampelkreuz. If you choose a tour based on the type of route, this distinction can help you decide.

Parish church and protected cultural heritage

The parish church of St Peter the Apostle was built between 1741 and 1742. Only the medieval tower has retained its original form. The building’s history thus brings together two periods: the church’s construction in the 18th century and the older tower. This contrast makes the architecture’s historical layers tangible, without suggesting that the rest of the church building dates from the same period as the tower.

The chancel features late Baroque trompe-l’œil architectural paintings depicting St Benedict and St Scholastica. The term “trompe-l’œil architecture” refers to an architectural effect created through painting. Some high-quality late Baroque Stations of the Cross paintings in the church come from the school of the Kremser Schmidt. This creates a specific contrast within the furnishings: on the one hand, illusionistic architecture featuring two saints; on the other, Stations of the Cross paintings attributed to an artist’s school.

The listed cemetery and cemetery chapel are located in Inzersdorf an der Traisen. The Falkenhayn and Colloredo-Wallsee tombs, together with their enclosure, in Inzersdorf an der Traisen are also protected as monuments by decree.

Views, a castle and traditional wine taverns

Theyerner Höhe offers a scenic highlight. The viewpoint is in the vineyards between Inzersdorf and Getzersdorf; the view extends to the Alpine foothills, the Danube and Herzogenburg Abbey. It can be reached via hiking, cycling and mountain biking routes. Visitors can therefore choose between three specified ways of getting there, while the location and the view provide a shared destination. Those more interested in landscapes than architecture and visual art will find a different focus here.

Walpersdorf Castle offers another connection to architecture and culture. The imposing Renaissance castle, with its fortified design, is considered the municipality’s most impressive building. Compared with the parish church, whose history is associated with the years 1741 to 1742 and its medieval tower, Renaissance style and fortifications define the description here. Concerts, exhibitions and cultural events are held at the castle, which is a meeting place for art and culture enthusiasts. If you plan to attend a specific event, check its date in advance.

Wine lovers can also enjoy a specific culinary experience: the municipality’s wines can be sampled year-round at traditional wine taverns, accompanied by a hearty snack. Check the opening hours of your chosen establishment in advance.
