The Max Schubert Observation Tower marks the exact geographic center of Lower Austria. From there, panoramic views extend across the foothills of the Alps as far as the Ă–tscher. The Erlebnisweg (Adventure Trail) runs around this center and is free to use year-round; its electronic stations are seasonal. If you would like to include the stations in your visit, take their seasonal availability into account when planning. The center thus represents not only a geographic distinction, but also panoramic views and a specific trail.
The Center and Different Trail Connections
The Purkersdorf–Göttweig Way of St. James passes by the observation tower. Those interested in this route can identify the viewpoint as a specifically named location along the way. The circular hiking trail in Kapelln is classified as a permanent hiking trail under the IVV rating system. These details help with two different decisions: the first places the observation tower along a named route, while the second specifies the status of the circular trail. If you are choosing based on a route connection or a hiking-trail classification, these provide two distinct points of reference.
The nature trail starts at the Petronillabach stream, just behind the church, and is suitable for walking and Nordic walking. Its starting point is therefore precisely located, and two ways of using it are explicitly mentioned. This offers a different focus from the observation tower or the IVV rating: here, the emphasis is on walking and Nordic walking.
Church Art and History
The Late Gothic parish church in Kapelln is dedicated to Saint Petronilla. The Baroque high altar displays a painting of the “Assumption of the Virgin Mary” by Daniel Gran. The combination of a Late Gothic church and a Baroque high altar draws attention to two periods and a specifically named altarpiece. It may be possible to look inside the church through the entrance by the church tower; before your visit, check whether this option will be available.
Schloss Thalheim near Kapelln also has a historical connection: its origins date back to the 17th century. Alongside the art-historical aspects of the parish church, you can also explore the history of a castle with a specific date range.
Choose the Focus of Your Stay
Are you interested in the geographic center and the views, getting around on foot, or church art and history? The trails offer different options: the Way of St. James connection places the observation tower along a route, the IVV rating classifies the circular trail, and the nature trail is suitable for walking and Nordic walking. If the electronic stations are important to you, keep their seasonal availability in mind. If you would like to look inside the parish church, check beforehand whether this will be possible during your visit.
