A defensive wall more than 500 metres long, eight information points tracing Egon Schiele’s footsteps and the Laabental Cycle Route give Neulengbach clear cultural and active highlights. Alongside its historic sites, the area has hiking and cycling routes, two very different museums and an outdoor swimming pool. When planning your visit, it is worth taking guided-tour duration and seasonal opening or exhibition arrangements into account.
Castle, Schiele and Historic Buildings
The defensive wall of Neulengbach Castle is more than 500 metres long. A guided tour of the castle lasts two hours and includes a walk around the fortifications as well as visits to the inner courtyard, main castle and exhibition. If you plan to join a tour, check the current schedule before travelling.
The Egon Schiele Trail leads through Neulengbach via eight information points tracing the artist’s footsteps and ends in the courtyard of the old courthouse. Egon Schiele was held in cell no. 2 at the Neulengbach District Court until 30 April 1912. The number of stops and the specific endpoint give the trail a clear connection to the town.
In Markersdorf, the Church of St. Lawrence dates back to the 12th century. At the ruins of Raipoltenbach Water Castle, the moats and three of the four corner towers have been preserved. The buildings showcase different historical details: the church is dated by century, while at the ruins, parts of the original complex remain.
Hiking, Views and Cycling Routes
The KulTOUR Trail Neulengbach has fourteen information stops. Outside the town centre, it follows rivers, meadows and fields without any major climbs. If you would like to take in the landscape as well as the information stops on your walk, this route description gives you specific details about the terrain and surroundings.
The “Buchberg via Laurenzikirche, Neulengbach” hiking route starts at Neulengbach Stadt station. The Buchberg lookout tower was built in 2004 using modern timber construction. It is 22.5 metres high and offers views from the Ötscher to the Waldviertel.
Fourteen cycling routes are available in Neulengbach. For a comparison based on a stated route length, the Laabental Cycle Route is a good option: it follows the Laabenbach stream for 15.8 kilometres. As conditions on individual routes may change, check the latest route information before setting off.
Outdoor Swimming Pool and Museums with Specific Conditions
Neulengbach outdoor swimming pool is right next to the Laabental Cycle Route and offers swimming for people of all ages. It is a 15-minute walk from the Neulengbach Stadt ÖBB stop. These provide two different reference points for planning: its direct connection to the cycle route and the stated walk from the stop. Check the pool’s current operating hours before visiting.
The MUSEUM Region Neulengbach has no permanent exhibition and is open only during current exhibitions. Opening hours are announced as part of each event. Before visiting, check the announcement for the current exhibition to find out when the museum is open.
The “eitle Kinderkram” museum features a pinball exhibition with more than 130 machines, eleven of which visitors can try. In summer, it presents a LEGO® exhibition with more than 2,200 sets. In winter, the museum offers retro video games such as Super Nintendo and Sega Megadrive, as well as old Commodore and Windows computers to try. As seasonal offerings may change, check the current programme before your visit.
