Altlengbach combines a rich local history with trails offering different points of interest. Three cultural walking trails lead to a total of 15 historic and significant sights; the Altlengbach circular hiking trail runs through the district of Altlengbach, the town centre and the surrounding landscape. When planning, it is worth deciding first what you would like to focus on: to explore local history, you can visit the castle, church and chapel. If you would like to include some exercise, you can choose between the culture trails and the circular hiking trail. Other options include the outdoor pool and the municipality’s natural areas.

Castle Ruins, Parish Church and Chapel

Altlengbach Castle Ruins comprise two structural areas. The upper castle has an almost square ground plan and stands on an earth mound. The outer bailey lies to the east, about six metres lower, arranged around a rectangular courtyard. The castle was built around 1400 by the Fallbachers of Loosdorf. It was destroyed during the Turkish siege and was not rebuilt.

The parish church and rectory of Altlengbach also have a long history: they were established in 1192 from the old castle of the Lengenbach family. The parish church is dedicated to Simon and Jude. It was badly damaged during the Turkish siege and rebuilt in 1695. The recorded histories of the two complexes therefore differ: the castle was destroyed and not rebuilt, whereas the parish church was reconstructed.

The Herrgottschmieden Chapel adds another chapter to the town’s history. Its origins date to the period after the second Turkish siege of 1683. The listed chapel was moved about 35 metres in 2013 to make way for the complete redesign of the intersection of Prinzbachstraße and Hauptstraße.

Culture Trails and Circular Hiking Trail

The three cultural walking trails lead to a total of 15 historic and significant sights. Both the distance and walking time are given for Culture Trail 1 through Altlengbach, Lengbachl and Steinhäusl: it is about 11.5 kilometres long, with a walking time of approximately three hours. These approximate figures provide a practical guide for planning this route.

The Altlengbach circular hiking trail runs through the district, the town centre and the surrounding landscape. There are fitness stations along the way where you can do various exercises. You can therefore choose between a route with a specified distance and walking time and a circular trail that passes through these three areas. Hiking maps are available for visitors to take free of charge at the municipal office.

Outdoor Pool and Natural Areas

Altlengbach outdoor pool has a large swimming pool with two small diving towers, a non-swimmer pool with a slide and a baby pool with a water mushroom and sun canopy. The outdoor pool also has a table tennis table that is freely accessible, an adjoining playground and a multi-purpose sports court. In addition to the pools, there are areas for table tennis, play and exercise.

Altlengbach’s natural areas include meadows, pastures, forests and bodies of water. They also include areas of particular nature conservation interest and selected plant and animal species. Bio-Obst Höllerer offers another local connection: the business sells apples and pears from organic farming and invites visitors to sample its products in the farm shop. The specific range may change.
