Guntramsdorf combines striking evidence of local and industrial history with opportunities to enjoy nature and a long-standing wine culture. The options differ considerably when planning a visit: some museum offerings require advance booking, hiking trails can be assessed by their approximate length and duration, and the Jakobi Days take place in late July.

Culture: From Garden Pavilion to Industrial Monument

Guntramsdorf’s garden pavilion is the only part of the former castle still standing today. On the pavilion’s first floor is the ballroom, with an extensive collection of frescoes. The motifs depicted include grotesques, chinoiserie, festive and banquet scenes, exotic animals and masks. The pavilion thus offers a glimpse into the history of the castle; its interior also provides specific details that reveal how historical rooms were designed.

Another way to explore local history is the Guntramsdorf Heimatmuseum – Ernst Wurth. It documents more than 5,000 years of the town’s history. Offerings include themed specialist tours, children’s tours, walks around the town and film screenings; advance booking is required for these activities. Groups planning a cultural outing will find a dedicated focus at the Walzengravieranstalt Museum: it is a fully preserved factory complex dating from the late 19th century, with extensive machinery, and is classified as an industrial monument. Groups of five or more can visit the museum at any time by prior arrangement.

The industrial history is evident here not only in the preserved complex. All the machines, tools and the rare central transmission system still work at the push of a button, just as they have for decades. While the local history museum spans more than five millennia of the town’s history, the Walzengravieranstalt focuses on a factory complex and its technology. This makes it possible to distinguish between two different cultural highlights in Guntramsdorf.

Nature and Trails Around Guntramsdorf

On the edge of town lies the Eichkogel, one of Lower Austria’s most valuable nature reserves. Its species-rich dry grasslands are home to rare plant and animal species. The Windradlteich is another distinctive natural and recreational feature: it is one of the market town’s main local recreation areas.

For longer outings, consider the circular hiking trails from Guntramsdorf-Thallern to the Jubiläumswarte or Wilhelmswarte. They are approximately 9 to 12 kilometres long and take around 3 to 4 hours. These estimates can help you set aside a block of several hours. Another way to get active outdoors is the Nordic walking park, with its five circular routes. Its five loops offer a dedicated selection for Nordic walking; the hiking trails, by contrast, have specific approximate distances and durations.

Wine Culture and Cycling Route

The long-standing Heuriger wine tavern culture is central to social life in Guntramsdorf. Regional cuisine and winegrowing are at the heart of community life. The Jakobi Days provide a fixed date in the annual calendar: the wine festival takes place every year in late July, when local vintners serve wine at the church square. If you would like to combine your visit with this festival, you can take the dates into account when planning your trip.

Cyclists also have a clearly defined point of reference: the Weingarten cycle route is signposted continuously along its entire length. It runs between the connections to the Thermen cycle route (EuroVelo 9) at Guntramsdorf and Bad Vöslau. This means the information for planning differs from that for the circular hiking trails: for the hikes, approximate distance and duration are provided, while for the cycling route, the signposting and the named connections are specified.
