Kirchengasse leads from the town hall to St. Michael’s Parish Church and, together with the adjacent Renaissance courtyards, forms a distinctive historic ensemble in Gumpoldskirchen. Restaurants and traditional wine taverns along the street invite you to linger and enjoy Gumpoldskirchen wines. Those wishing to combine culture and enjoyment will find two distinct local highlights here: historic architectural styles and regional wine culture.
Kirchengasse, Courtyards and Parish Church
Most of the Renaissance houses along Kirchengasse were built in the 16th and 17th centuries. St. Michael’s Parish Church has an earlier building history: its current structure dates from the first half of the 15th century and is one of the treasures of rural Gothic architecture in Lower Austria. Renaissance and rural Gothic architecture thus represent different historical periods in the town. The church’s current structure is older than most of the Renaissance houses.
Since 2008, a Gothic labyrinth has complemented St. Michael’s Parish Church and the castle in Gumpoldskirchen. Visitors enjoy walking through it meditatively. This adds another way to discover the town to the exploration of its architectural history: a path that visitors can walk with mindful intention.
Exhibitions and Museums
Exhibitions are held at the Bergerhaus throughout the year. It also houses the Wine Museum, which features a wooden wine press from the 16th century. For an independent visit, check the tourist office’s opening hours; guided tours are available by prior arrangement. This makes it possible to combine learning about the history of winegrowing with the exhibitions at the Bergerhaus and practical visit planning.
The Gumpoldskirchen Fire Brigade Museum has a different focus. Since autumn 1994, it has been located at Kirchenplatz in the former arsenal of the Gumpoldskirchen Volunteer Fire Brigade. The building’s former purpose is therefore directly connected to the subject of the museum.
Vineyards and Hiking Trails
The Gumpoldskirchen Wine Hiking Trail begins in the vineyards opposite St. Michael’s Parish Church. A hiking route to the Anninger hiking region passes through the Dreidärrischenhöhle cave in the Siebenbrunnengraben valley. The two routes offer different highlights: the Wine Hiking Trail starts among the vineyards, while the cave is part of the route towards Anninger. Those who want to spend time outdoors can choose a hike to suit their interests.
A Historical View of Anninger
The history of the Calvary at the foot of Anninger is another religious highlight of the town. In 1855, participants in a pilgrimage to the Cholera Chapel in Helenental decided to build a Calvary there, complete with Stations of the Cross. This decision marks a specific historical connection between a pilgrimage and the planned site. Together with the buildings, museums and hiking trails, it offers visitors to Gumpoldskirchen a range of options to suit different interests.
