At Lahnsattel, a primeval forest is home to 250-year-old fir trees, dense, luxuriant ferns and rare orchids. In addition to this distinctive woodland landscape, things to see and do in Sankt Aegyd Am Neuwalde include hiking destinations, a cycling route, a pilgrimage route, museums and architectural heritage. The village lies in the upper Traisental at the foot of Gippel, which stands 1,669 m high, and Göller, at 1,766 m. This offers a choice of different priorities for your stay: nature and outdoor activities, or culture shaped by craftsmanship and architecture.
Hiking between peaks and mountain huts
Around 50 kilometres of hiking trails in Sankt Aegyd Am Neuwalde lead to peaks, rustic mountain shelters and alpine dairy huts, as well as viewpoints. For a specific summit route, Göller offers the most frequently used ascent. It starts at Kernhofer Gscheid, passes Gsenger on the way up from the north to the broad summit plateau, and takes about 2½ hours. Check mountain conditions and access before setting out. The approximate walking time is a guide for planning your schedule.
The family-friendly Wancurasteig leads from St. Aegyd to Zdarskyhütte on Traisenberg. Several information boards cover local life, flora and fauna, and explain how to behave responsibly in the mountains. To reach the Wancurasteig, take the train to Lilienfeld and then the bus to St. Aegyd am Neuwalde Augasse; check the timetable details before travelling. The Göller ascent focuses on the summit route and approximate walking time, while the Wancurasteig leads to Zdarskyhütte and has information boards along the way.
Cycling route, pilgrimage route and courses
The 111 km Traisental Cycle Route passes through Sankt Aegyd Am Neuwalde. The Vienna Pilgrimage Route 06 also runs through the village and continues to Mariazell. These offer different ways to travel: a long-distance cycle route and a route with a pilgrimage destination. The Nordic Centre and the nordic sports academy offer specialist courses and individual training programmes. Availability may vary by season.
Discover craftsmanship and architecture
The St. Aegyd Local History Museum covers the timber and iron industries and the trades associated with them. Exhibits include equipment and tools from cooperage, shingle making, wheelwrighting, carpentry and cabinetmaking. The collection thus offers an insight into a range of crafts and complements the nature and trail themes with a cultural focus.
The Pipe Museum opened in May 1995; visits can be arranged at any time by appointment. Keep this in mind when planning a museum visit. Another architectural highlight is the Protestant little forest church in Haselgraben: it is a rare example of a religious building in the Art Nouveau style and was designed by Josef Hoffmann.
When choosing a hotel, your preferred focus for the day can be a good starting point. A summit hike with an approximate walking time calls for different planning than a visit by appointment or a seasonal course. First decide which activities you want to shape your stay, then plan around the conditions for each one.
