The Triesting River rises in Kaumberg. The contrast between the gentle hills of the Vienna Woods region and the foothills of the Alps is also particularly striking here. Hiking trails, a castle ruin and the Via Sacra give the town a range of different character – from a tour through the cultural landscape to a glimpse into history.
Hikes for Different Timeframes
The Froschweg is a medium-length hiking route that starts in Kaumberg and explores the cultural landscape east of the town in a clockwise direction. Another option is the Hirschweg: it starts at the main square, is moderately difficult and covers 9.44 kilometres. The hike is listed as taking about three hours. Along the way, the route offers scenic views across meadows and partly through wooded areas; sights include the Eiserne Tor, Schneeberg and Ă–tscher.
The information about the Hirschweg provides a concrete guide for planning the hike. Since route conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out. Those planning to walk to Araburg can also use a time estimate as a guide: the castle is about a 90-minute walk from the centre of Kaumberg. This is the walking time to the castle, not the duration of a circular route.
Araburg and the Town’s Architectural History
Araburg is a castle ruin built in the 12th century at an altitude of almost 800 metres. It is described as the highest castle ruin in Lower Austria. From the 27-metre-high keep, visitors can enjoy views across the hilly Alpine foothills. Interactive tours present the castle’s history and life in the 13th and 14th centuries. At Araburg, the construction period, the views and later historical ways of life are all brought together.
St. Michael’s Parish Church also dates back to the 12th century and was built in the Gothic style. It is a former fortified church, partly surrounded by a defensive wall. For visitors interested in the town’s history, the castle and church offer two distinct architectural points of reference. Araburgstüberl is housed within the walls of Araburg; it serves freshly cooked meals and regional products every day.
Pilgrimage and Cycling
The second stage of the Via Sacra leads from Heiligenkreuz through Altenmarkt to Kaumberg. A bus connection makes it possible to hike sections of the Via Sacra as day trips. If you are planning such a section, factor the bus timetable into your choice of stage. This is separate from the Kaumberg pilgrimage on foot to Mariazell, which takes place every year in July.
There are also two specific cycling options: the Triesting Gölsental Cycle Path runs through Kaumberg, while Schöpfel can be reached from Kaumberg via marked cycle routes. These describe two different options – a cycle route through the town and marked paths leading to a named destination.
A Seasonal Look at Kaumberg
In winter, Brandlwiese has a small ski area with a platter lift. Check the winter facilities before travelling. This allows you to plan according to the season, while hiking, historic buildings, pilgrimage routes and cycling connections offer further specific activities during a stay in Kaumberg.
