Stiefern combines a centuries-old wine-growing tradition with distinctive traces of cultural history and trails along the Kamp. The village is located in the heart of Kamptal Nature Park. This gives you different focal points to consider when planning your visit: you can explore buildings and historic sites, or compare river and landscape routes by their courses.

Loess, Nature Park and Wine-Growing Tradition

Powerful loess deposits, around 87,000 years old, frame the settlement area of Stiefern. The loess wall offers a specific connection to this landscape: it is Experience Point 14 of Kamptal Cultural Park and lies directly on the cycle path. Wine-growing has a centuries-old tradition in Stiefern. While the loess deposits shape the landscape, wine-growing points to a long local cultural history.

Church, Calvary Hill and Historic Bridge

The Church of St John the Baptist has been a parish church since 1266 and is surrounded by imposing medieval defensive walls. Its high altar painting dates from 1767 and is a work by the Kremser Schmidt. The parish status, walls and altar painting point to different historical reference points: the parish history dating back to 1266, the medieval setting and a later artistic work.

Calvary Hill lies between Stiefern and Schönberg. It is marked by two Stations of the Cross and was of regional importance in the 18th century. From the hillside of Calvary Hill, the view stretches as far as the foothills of the Alps. Here, a historical reference combines with a far-reaching view; the parish church, in turn, offers a specific art-historical point of interest with its high altar painting.

The former Stiefern road bridge is also one of the Kamptal's notable engineering landmarks. Built in 1900, it is a technical monument. Of the many bridges that once spanned the Kamp Valley, it is the last road bridge made of iron to remain in its original condition.

Choose trails by their route

The Babenberger Circular Hiking Trail 658 passes through Stiefern and explores the valley of the Stiefernbach stream. The “Stiefinger Schleife” (Stiefinger Loop) offers a different local connection: it branches off the Kamptal Cycle Path in the Kellergasse and leads to the parish church. The trails can therefore be distinguished by their respective destinations: the circular hiking trail explores the stream valley, while the Stiefinger Loop includes the parish church as a destination.

The Kamptal River Nature Trail runs along the Kamp from Schönbergneustift via Schönberg, Stiefern and Oberplank to Plank. For planning purposes, its river route is the key difference from the specific destinations described for the other trails. You can choose whether your excursion should focus on the Stiefernbach valley, the parish church or the succession of places along the Kamp.

Swimming and Getting There

The Stiefern bathing meadow on the Kamp is freely accessible and offers a place to swim. Check access conditions before your visit. This makes a stay by the water another way to enjoy the area, alongside its historic sites and routes.

Stiefern railway station is located in the market town of Schönberg am Kamp. Its specially designed waiting shelter provides protection when waiting for the Kamptal Railway in bad weather. As train services and timetables are subject to change, check the latest connections when planning your journey.
