Stratzing can be explored through very different themes: archaeological finds, a historic parish church and paths through the wine-growing landscape each offer a distinct way to discover the town. Set on a high plateau amid a wine-growing region, the landscape is framed by the Wachau, the Kremstal and the Kamptal. Here, local history and hiking trails meet a long tradition of viticulture.

Viticulture and the Kellergassenfest

Viticulture in Stratzing has been documented since 1209. The wine-growing landscape also features in descriptions of the stages of the Kremstal-Danube long-distance hiking trail: several named vineyards lie along the paths leading to Stratzing or starting there. If you want to explore Stratzing on foot, you’ll find specific routes through the vineyards, rather than simply viewing the landscape from the outside.

Wine and regional specialties are also at the heart of the traditional Stratzing Kellergassenfest: visitors can enjoy fine wines and homemade delicacies. If the festival is an important part of your itinerary, check the dates for your planned visit.

Ice Age history at Galgenberg

The Ice Age hiking trail on Galgenberg combines a theme with hands-on stops. Ten stations explore life during the Ice Age; an electronic game, a turning wheel and flip panels invite visitors to engage actively with the subject. The trail has been redesigned around the site where Fanny was found.

Another archaeological connection is a human figurine found in Stratzing in 1988. It is about 32,000 years old and, according to current research, is considered Austria’s oldest work of art and the world’s oldest stone sculpture depicting a human. Together, the find and the themed trail give Stratzing’s Ice Age heritage a specific location and a vivid form: the trail brings the history to life with ten interactive stations.

Fortified Church and Parish Church of St. Nicholas

The fortified church in Stratzing was built in the 12th century, around 1122. The present three-aisled pillar basilica of the parish church of St. Nicholas was consecrated in 1522. These dates mark different stages in the building’s history: the early construction of the fortified church and the consecration of the present basilica.

A painting by Martin Johann Schmidt from 1769 depicts Saint Nicholas with a view of Stratzing. The work combines the saint’s image with a depiction of the town. Along with the building’s history, it offers another perspective on Stratzing’s parish church and its place in history.

Hiking through vineyards and woodland

Stage 10 of the Kremstal-Danube long-distance hiking trail leads from Lengenfeld through the vineyards of Sand, Kremsfeld, Riedl, Satzen and Loiserweg. It reaches Stratzing via the Stratzing Kellergasse. Stage 11 starts in the wine-growing town of Stratzing and passes through vineyards by Sunogeln and Hochsatzen. It then runs through a shady stretch of woodland along the Stratzingbach to Priel and DroĂź.

The descriptions present markedly different landscapes: Stage 10 focuses on the sequence of vineyards and the Kellergasse on the way to Stratzing; Stage 11 complements the vineyards with a stretch of woodland along the Stratzingbach. When planning, you can consider which of these landscapes you would like to focus on, without treating the two stages as similar routes.
